<p>This College, part of Birmingham University but at a different location in the city, was where I did my elementary school teacher training. Before I applied, it had been a two-year course, but then changed to three years for when I started. I'm trying to remember if it included a few weeks of being in one of the city elementary schools during each of the three years, or if we only went into two schools. <br />
<br />
The schools I went to were in one of the worst parts of the city, where families were dealing with poverty and other difficulties. It was not unheard of for a child to come to school, not wearing shoes. <br />
<br />
Just as a side note, one of these schools was by Winson Green Prison. I'm not sure, but I think it may have been one year after I was doing my teaching practice there that Ozzy Osbourne spent six weeks in Winson Green Prison when he was unable to pay a fine after being found guilty of burgling a clothes shop. To teach his son a lesson, his father refused to pay the fine." Dear Ozzy (and Sharon and family). I have thought about them many times over the years.<br />
<br />
After this training course, we were placed in a city school for a probation year. My school was Yorkmead Primary School, on York Road off Stratford Road. I shared a mixed class of Grade5/6 students (with a teacher who worked part time) and these were wonderful kids! Great memories come flooding back from time to time. Something extra special, and totally unexpected, was when I received a message from one of the students, Stephen, just a few years ago, thanking me for being his teacher all those years ago and telling me what he had been doing with his life (great things, by the way!). Absolutely made my day!<br />
<br />
As well as my own class, I was also given a class of 40 Grade 4 boys, for Art! If I get round to it, I will try and scan a few photos from both my teaching practices and Yorkmead school. This included things such as woodwork, and papier mache puppets. Can you imagine how much mess 40 Grade 4 boys can create when making buckets of wet papier mache, lol?<br />
<br />
Sadly, I had to leave Yorkmead in May 1966, as I was getting married and moving overseas to various places, including Qatar, Holland, Borneo, and Oman. Wives were not allowed to work and my teaching career came to an abrupt end. Once we came to Canada, I was able to volunteer at my children's school, which I loved, and was also a volunteer for 12 years at Children's Hospital in the child abuse program, and 18 years at the Food Bank.</p>
