Six Flags Over Texas

Six Flags Over Texas is a 212-acre (86 ha) theme park located in Arlington, Texas, east of Fort Worth and about 15 miles (24 km) west of Dallas. It was the first Six Flags Theme Park, but because of later acquisitions it is not the oldest park of the Six Flags chain. The park opened on August 5, 1961, following just a year of construction and an initial investment of US$10 million by real estate developer Angus G. Wynne, Jr. Since its opening, Six Flags Over Texas has consistently performed well in terms of attendance and revenue, despite its history of ever-changing owners and expansions. The park currently has several amusement rides and attractions, bringing in thousands of visitors daily.

The park is managed, but not owned, by the Six Flags corporation, in an arrangement similar to that for Six Flags Over Georgia. Six Flags Over Texas is owned by a group of approximately 120 limited partners—some the heirs of Angus G. Wynne. Starting in 1991, the park was managed by Time Warner Entertainment. In 1998, Time Warner sold its interests in the Six Flags parks to Premier Parks of Oklahoma City, which later changed its name to Six Flags Theme Parks, Inc.

The city of Arlington has become known as the Entertainment Capital of Texas due to the presence of Six Flags Over Texas and professional sports teams, the Texas Rangers playing in Globe Life Stadium, and the Dallas Cowboys playing at AT&T Stadium. Three Lamar High School students are pictured here on August 16, 1973, promoting the city of Arlington and its 1970s entertainment venues, Six Flags, Seven Seas Marine Life Park, and the Texas Rangers.
Six Flags Over Texas opened on August 5, 1961. Over 8,000 guests visited the park on opening day. Admission cost $2.75 for adults and $2.25 for children. Guests enjoyed 46 major attractions including LaSalle’s River Boat Adventure ride, Skull Island, and even gunfighter performances.
Seven Seas Marine Life Park operated from1972 to 1976. Advertised as an “educational, enchanting, amusement park,” Seven Seas was divided into seven distinct areas representing various oceans around the world. The multi-million dollar attraction featured underwater viewing areas, a pirate ship, lagoons, waterfalls, and pagodas. Entertainment included performances by seals, dolphins, and walrus. The Arlington Sheraton Hotel is now located on this site.
Efforts of Arlington mayor Tom Vandergriff to bring Major League Baseball to North Texas commenced with the construction of the $1.9 million, 10,000-seat Turnpike Stadium completed in 1965 as the home of minor league Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs. Vandergriff fulfilled his dream when the American League authorized the Washington Senators franchise to relocate to Arlington in 1971. The team became the Texas Rangers and began play in the renamed Arlington Stadium in spring 1972.
