Chartres

Lesley, Marlis and Mark flew from Poland to Paris to meet up with Mark's parents Elaine and Jared. We stayed at a b&b on the outskirts of Paris. It was the same place that Mark and Lesley had stayed a couple years earlier with Flora, James, and Sandra.

Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, in the Middle Ages, the Porte Guillaume was the main entrance into Chartres for travelers arriving from Paris or Orléans. Its construction was a tribute to Guillaume de Ferrières, vidame of Chartres and lord of La Ferté-Arnault (today called La Ferté-Vidame). A chapel was located on the first floor of the gate, the Chartres could access it via a flight of steps, overlooking a rampart. Following the French Revolution, after Chartres Cathedral, the Porte Guillaume was one of the main vestiges of Chartres still standing. It was decided not to touch it.
Unusual fact: its name was changed to Porte Guillaume Tell because names evoking the old regime were prohibited. Victim of the ravages of time, it witnessed fires and wars from the 16th century. This led to it being restored on multiple occasions. In fact, the site was partially destroyed during a fire in 1856 which broke out in a part used as an attic (rented to traders). Furthermore, before the war of 1914-1918, it served as a popular library. Before the 12th century, the city's fortifications were limited to the heart of the city. They ran from Place de l’Étape-au-vin via Rue Cendreuse and Place Châtelet. Furthermore, Chartres Cathedral itself was only accessible through 9 doors. Called the doors of the cloisters, they are today materialized on the ground and illuminated at nightfall.
It was during the time of Bishop Fulbert that Chartres became a center of intellectual and spiritual training. A reputation that was built over the years and reached its peak in the 12th century across medieval Europe. With the development of the city, new ramparts were erected, enclosing the city's suburbs under the reign of Philippe Auguste. This medieval enclosure had 12 gates or posterns (small gates) providing access to enter Chartres, which was now split into 2 parts: upper town and lower town. The most important entrances were Porte Châtelet, Saint-Jean, Drouaise, Guillaume, Morard, Saint-Michel and des Épars.
