And this is the Château de Chambord itself, in real life. I took this picture to emphasize the turret on the northwestern corner of the building.

After the French Revolution, the château went through a chaotic period, as the revolutionaries stripped it for parts and materials. When the Bourbon dynasty was restored, a failed attempt was made to restore it. The building served as a field hospital in the Franco-Prussian War.

The Count of Chambord, who had inherited the property, passed it on to his sister's heirs, who were residents of Austria; as a result it was confiscated by the French government after World War I, which pitted Britain and France against Germany and Austria, began. During World War II, it was used to hide priceless works of art from the Nazis.

This impeccable row of trees lies the grand front lawn of the Château de Chambord. It looks much grander than the courtyard, which is mostly an open space paved with pebbles.

This is one of several bedrooms in the Château de Chambord, and the fact that there are so many should not come as a surprise. Remember, the large building was divided into apartments.

And here is an elegant study in the Château de Chambord, with a nice writing desk along with some chairs. There were so many rooms in the château, there was no way I could have photographed all of them.

Next door to the Château de Chambord is a small community church for the eponymous commune, Eglise Saint-Louis de de Chambord. The current church building was constructed in 1850, during the brief Second Republic.

The king of France was ordained by God - so they thought - to rule, and the Catholic monarchs of Europe, including the king of France, recognized the pope as their personal pastor, so it only made sense that a chapel would be provided in the Château de Chambord for private services on Sundays. This is the altar in that chapel.

The front of the Château de Chambord faces north, and the grand entrance road in the background connects with the modern D112 route, which no doubt replaced an earlier road from the sixteenth century.

The front grounds are not so much a garden as they are an elegantly landscaped lawn. The Cosson Canal acts as a sort of moat, where there would definitely have been a drawbridge to allow visitors (or the king himself, journeying from Paris) across.

France has a horrible graffiti problem. Kids write graffiti all over places like autoroute underpasses, blank walls, even on elevated-Metro trestles in Paris. At the Château de Chambord, the caretakers have made it clear with this sign: No graffiti allowed.

Not that the individual who literally etched the graffito below in stone paid any heed.

The rear of Château de Chambord faces south toward the D33 local highway that passes through the village that shares its name with the château. This road connects the château with the area near the village, passing the modern D33 and eventually terminating at a local country road several kilometers beyond.

The topiary bushes on either side of the rad lining the paths around the château are indicative of the masterfully symmetrical planning of the royal grounds.

Here's a nice, regal parlor in the Château de Chambord, with several portraits of royals on the sumptuously papered wall.

King Louis XIV, the Sun King, established royal apartments at the Château de Chambord when he became old enough to reign on his own (he became king at the age of five when his father, Louis XIII, died), and he established this ceremonial bedroom in which t greet visitors. The château was vacated again after his death.

This, if I remember correctly, is the master bedroom in the Château de Chambord that would have been used by King Francis I.

Francis died in 1547, and the château was left unused for decades. It wasn't until 1639 that King Louis XIII gave it to his brother, Gaston, Duke of Orléans, who restored it and made improvements to it.

The Château de Chambord was constructed in the sixteenth century as a hunting lodge for King Francis I, the Italian architect Domenico da Cortona credited to designing.

Then he would have designed this stairwell, which is made of stone and bears two spiral staircases running concurrently. It is a masterful work of imagination.

I walked up and down both staircases.

After a long day taking pictures throughout the Loire region, I arrived at my hotel - a posh resort-style hotel next to the Château Chambord, one of many chateaux in the area. And the next day, I would get to see it.

As I made my way to the hotel entrance to check in, I snapped this picture of a footbridge crossing the Cosson Canal, part of the hotel property. Daylight was fading, but it made for a pretty picture.
