The Washington Memorial Chapel was built in 1903 to serve two purposes. The first purpose is as a tribute to George Washington and his service to our country. It currently serves as a wayside chapel for the visitors of Valley Forge National Historical Park. The second purpose is as the home for the Episcopal parish that worships at the chapel.<br />
<br />
The chapel is constructed in an impressive Gothic Revival style with a bell tower. The bell tower houses the Justice Bell, a replica of the Liberty Bell, which was used in the campaign to gain women's voting rights. The Veterans Wall of Honor honors all veterans of the United States Armed Services. The Washington Memorial Chapel offers special programing throughout the year such as concerts, reenactments, and special guest speakers.<br />
<br />
The chapel complex is also home to the Chapel Cabin Shop. Gifts, souvenirs, food and drink are available for purchase.</p>

This marker is placed at the encampment site of Regiments of the Commonwealth of Virginia to commemorate the officers and the men of Virginia. At that time encompassed what is now West Virginia. These Virginians were wintered here in 1777-1778 as part of General George Washington's Army in the War for American Independence. <br />

Grieving Mother Monument at Washington Chapel<br />

Grieving Mothers, also known as Sacrifice and Devotion, was executed by Bela Lyon Pratt in 1914. The bronze kneeling woman is dedicated to the mothers of the nation and in memory of Henrietta Armitt (brown) Heckscher, who died in child birth on June 11, 1912. The piece, which sits in enclosed garden of the Cloisters of the Colonies, was commissioned by Stevens Heckscher, the husband of Henrietta Heckscher. The Cloisters of the Colonies, to the west of Washington Memorial Chapter, features one bay for each of the colonies. <br />

During the Valley Forge Encampment most of the Continental Army’s cannons under Washington were stored here at Artillery Park. Artillery Park is centrally located between the first and second lines of defense. From this central location, the cannons could be rushed to the dirt mound defenses located throughout the encampment to help stop an attack by the British. Even with this reliable and flexible defense, the army still had to coax starving horses to pull the cannons through deep muddy camp roads, a near impossible task.<br />
<br />
Brigadier General Henry Knox commanded and trained around 630 officers and soldiers from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Continental regiments of Artillery from this location. Each gun would have 14 to 15 men operating it. The term “pounder” is used to describe the weight of the cannonball that would be fired out of the cannon. The most common cannon was the six-pounder, but there were also several three, four, and eight pounder cannons along with mortars and howitzers at Valley Forge. Cannons acquired by the Continental Army came from a variety of sources; some were cast in America, many were supplied from France, while others were captured from the British. At the end of the encampment in June of 1778, General Knox had under his command 40 to 50 field pieces.</p>

Valley Forge was the winter encampment of the Continental Army, under the command of George Washington, during the American Revolutionary War. The Valley Forge encampment lasted six months, from December 19, 1777, to June 19, 1778. It was the third of the eight winter encampments that Washington and the Continental Army endured during the war.<br />
<br />
Three months prior to the encampment at Valley Forge, in September 1777, the Second Continental Congress was forced to flee the revolutionary capital of Philadelphia ahead of an imminent British attack on the city following Washington's defeat in the Battle of Brandywine, a key battle during the British Army's Philadelphia campaign. Unable to defend Philadelphia, Washington led his 12,000-man army into winter quarters at Valley Forge, located approximately 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia.<br />
<br />
At Valley Forge, the Continental Army struggled to manage a disastrous supply crisis while simultaneously retraining and reorganizing their units in an effort to mount successful counterattacks against the British. During the encampment at Valley Forge, an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 soldiers died from disease, possibly exacerbated by malnutrition and cold, wet weather. In 1976, in recognition of the enormous historical significance of Valley Forge in American history, Valley Forge National Historical Park was established and named a national historic site, which protects and preserves nearly 3,500 acres of the original Valley Forge encampment site.</p>

This one room stone structure was built about 35 years after the encampment when the village of Valley Forge was expanding with industry. It served as a school until a new and larger building was constructed directly across Gulph Road. It then deteriorated and was used by local farmers as a storage shed and stable until it was restored first in 1915 and again in 1975.</p>

This 50 foot granite obelisk was erected in 1901 by the Daughters of the Revolution. It marks the site of the only identified grave at Valley Forge, that of Lieutenant John Waterman of Rhode Island, who died on April 23, 1778.</p>

The bronze statue of Inspector General Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Baron von Steuben, more commonly known as Baron von Steuben, overlooks the Grand Parade at Valley Forge. This monument's imposing presence is due in part to its height, with an 8 ½ foot tall statue mounted on top of a 6 foot 8 inches tall granite pedestal. Despite its larger-than-life appearance, the statue is realistic, simple, elegant, and detailed without being ornate. In the biography of J. Otto Schweizer, the statue's sculptor, the monument is described as depicting a:<br />
<br />
sturdy figure clad in the uniform of a Continental General covered with a heavy coat. The general strikes a watchful posture, his right foot resting on a slight elevation of the ground. The thumb of his left hand rests nonchalantly on the hilt while the other fingers hold the sheath. The well formed right hand reaches over the chest and grasps the left facing of his coat in a Napoleon-like gesture. The powerful head with its turned up hat reveals a grim determination albeit softened by human kindness.<br />
<br />
The Steuben monument at Valley Forge is an exact replica of a statue in Utica, New York, except for the addition of a bronze plaque mounted on the pedestal, which depicts General von Steuben drilling the soldiery. In the plaque, Steuben stands in the center. To the left, he drills the troops. To the right Schweizer depicted a camp scene complete with soldier huts, cannon, a headquarters building, and more soldiers.<br />
<br />
The statue was originally located on Outer Line Drive beyond the Anthony Wayne Statue. Photographs of the monument in its original location show it surrounded by trees - supposedly linden trees - which began life as seedlings from Germany. The monument was moved to its current location along Route 23 on September 10, 1979.</p>

She is an EMD SD40-2 built in 1978 as Burlington Northern (BN) 7092, to Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) 7092, to CIT Group/Capital Finance, Inc (CEFX) 7092. Prior to coming t the L&C, Gulf & Ohio Railways had assigned her to the Yadkin Valley Railroad (YVRR).</p>

<p>Now this was a rare thing for its age - a Volkswagen LT28 being used as a PSV. There were a handful of 'R' and 'S' plated LT28s around, but they were not at all common, especially when converted to carry 12 passengers, as Williams Deansgate had done with this one. <br />
<br />
It was the first vehicle for Harry Chester in his own name, although he initially ran in partnership with Geoff Goodwin, as well as still being the mechanic with Ericsway Coaches ! He ran it for nearly 5 years, then sold it to Eric Booth, who kept it for a few more months before moving it on privately.<br />
