<p>An astronomy friend and I went to Dover for the weekend with an aim to bag ourselves a comet but the opportunity was also there for a Milky Way capture on the English Channel but little did I realise how bloody near France was! Calais just lit up the Eastern skies. Nevertheless the intensity wasn't too much and seems Calais is using mostly the old sodium street lights, at least that's my perception. But as a bonus we were also two days away from the peak of the Lyrid meteor showers and my friend, Nick and I saw 6 meteors that night. My image shows one such meteor captured right above the galactic core of the Milky Way. <br />

<p>A 2012 July morning in Calais.<br />
<br />
Waiting to board the ferry to Dover I was completely surprised we could see the cliffs. It still amazes me, and yet it explains a lot as well.<br />
<br />
Although it technically is not a perfect picture I consider it one of my most precious ones. The mystique of the English Channel, the two coasts so close and yet so far away caught in one composition, is very, very dear to me.</p>

<p>The Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) was a conflict between the kingdoms of England and France and a civil war in France during the Late Middle Ages. It emerged from feudal disputes over the Duchy of Aquitaine and was triggered by a claim to the French throne made by Edward III of England. The war grew into a broader military, economic, and political struggle involving factions from across Western Europe, fuelled by emerging nationalism on both sides. The war took place over 116 years. <p>Das zwischen Dover und Calais verkehrende Fährschiff “Isle of Inishmore” (IMO 9142605, MMSI 209093000, Rufzeichen C4HQ2) wurde 1996 unter der Baunummer 968 auf der Werft Van der Giessen-De Noord in Krimpen aan den IJssel gebaut. Die Kiellegung fand am 8. Dezember 1995, der Stapellauf am 4. Oktober 1996 statt. Das fertiggestellte Schiff wurde am 14. Februar 1997 an Irish Ferries abgeliefert. Die Baukosten beliefen sich auf 60 Mio. Ir£. Das Schiff ersetzte die 1995 erbaute “Isle of Innisfree” und wurde zunächst zwischen Dublin und Holyhead eingesetzt. Im Mai 2001 wechselte es auf die Strecke zwischen Rosslare Harbour und Pembroke Dock. Die Strecke zwischen Dublin und Holyhead wurde von der neu in Dienst gestellten “Ulysses” übernommen.<br />
Das zunächst unter der Flagge Irlands betriebene Schiff wurde im März 2006 unter die Flagge Zyperns gebracht. Benannt ist das Schiff nach der größten Insel der vor der Westküste Irlands in der Galway Bay gelegenen Aran-Inseln.<br />
Im April 2021 wurde die “Isle of Inishmore” von der Route Pembroke Dock – Rosslare abgezogen und seit Juni 2021 auf der Verbindung im Ärmelkanal zwischen Dover und Calais eingesetzt.<br />
Das Schiff verfügt über elf Decks. Die Fahrzeugdecks befinden sich auf den Decks 3 bis 6. Insgesamt stehen auf den Fahrzeugdecks 2100 Spurmeter zur Verfügung. Hier finden Sie 855 Pkw Platz. Die Fähre kann 122 Sattelauflieger befördern. Für Sattelauflieger mit temperaturgeführter Ladung sind 40 Stromanschlüsse vorhanden.<br />
Auf Deck 7 und 8 befinden sich die Aufenthaltsräume für die Passagiere, im vorderen Teil von Deck 9 sind die Passagierkabinen untergebracht. Auf dem obersten Deck, Deck 11, ist eine „Sky Lounge“ untergebracht. Auf diesem Deck befindet sich im vorderen Bereich der Decksaufbauten die Brücke des Schiffes. Der hintere Teil von Deck 9 und Deck 10 sind der Schiffsbesatzung vorbehalten. Die Passagierkapazität des Schiffes beträgt 2.200 Personen.<br />
Die “Isle of Inishmore” ist 182,50 Meter lang, 27,80 Meter breit und hat einen maximalen Tiefgang von 5,80 Meter. Sie ist mit 34031 BRZ / 10.748 NRZ vermessen und wird von einer 90-köpfigen Besatzung gefahren.<br />
Der Antrieb des Schiffes erfolgt durch vier Achtzylinder – Dieselmotoren des Herstellers Sulzer (Typ: 8ZAL40S) mit je 5760 kW Leistung (Gesamtleistung ca. 31.325 PS). Die Motoren wirken auf zwei Verstellpropeller mit Becker-Ruder. Für die Stromerzeugung stehen drei Dieselgeneratorsätze zur Verfügung, die von Sulzer-Dieselmotoren mit jeweils 1160 kW Leistung angetrieben werden sowie zwei von den Hauptmotoren angetriebene Generatoren mit jeweils 2800 kW Leistung zur Verfügung. Außerdem wurde ein Notgenerator mit 400 kW Leistung verbaut. Das Schiff ist mit zwei Bugstrahlrudern mit jeweils 1500 kW Leistung ausgerüstet.</p>
