<p>Wednesday morning, and so up and about for a packed day.<br />
<br />
After getting dressed and having coffee, I have to drop Jools off in town for her fitness class. Though I drop her off at the layby near the castle, where away to the left across the Channel, the coast of La Belle France is as clear as a bell.<br />
<br />
I go down to the coach park to turn round, pausing to take shots of the castle, glistening in the rays of the just risen sun, before driving back up to the Duke of Yorks roundabout, along to Whitfield, before turning down the hill to River.<br />
<br />
Kent is mostly chalk downland, and this is carved and shaped by the movement of water. Water caused by rain and snow melt, flows along valleys in winterbournes.<br />
<br />
Dover's rive, the River Dour, rises mainly in Temple Ewell, although that water flows from Chislehurst at least, to rise the flow along one of the town's valleys into the town.<br />
<br />
Another branch rises along the Alkham Valley, near the hamlet of Drellingore, from which the winterbourne takes its name. This bourne is said by local lore, to only flow once every seven years, but in recent times has flowed more frequently than that.<br />
<br />
We did pass that way on Saturday, I noted it's passage over farmland at the valley's lowest point, so would return to snap it in due course.<br />
<br />
I park in the gateway of a field, the usual spot, and in the deep shadow of the down, take four or five shots before driving off to the next stop.</p>

The Roman lighthouse (pharos) was built around AD 130 to guide ships into the harbour next to the Roman fort. When the church was built around AD 1000, they adapted the lighthouse as a bell tower. The church was abandoned in the 1700's and from 1770 until it's restoration in the 1850's, it was used to store coal.</p>

Dover Castle is prominent in this view. Three towers of the Swingate transmitting station can also be seen atop the cliffs, this was one of the first 5 Chain Home Radar stations, built in 1936.<br />

<p>After immersing ourselves in the history of The Angel, back outside we were surprised at how quiet it was on this section of Bermondsey Wall East - and yet we were only a short distance from busy central London.<br />
<br />
From The Angel, Rotherhithe Road was a narrow thoroughfare. It is a shared foot and cycle path these days. Apart from The Angel, all the buildings have long since vanished. Nature is reclaiming the land now the shipping trades have gone. At King's Stairs there is one old building still standing - rather odd but a welcome tangible connection to the past. At one time the building was used to make oars and masts. On the opposite side of King's Stairs stood the Dover Castle. A few doors, further along on the same side, stood the Jolly Waterman.<br />
<br />
These two taverns, along with The Angel, were considered for compensation by the justices for the Newington Licensing Division in February 1929.<br />
<br />
Representing Taylor, Walker & Co. Ltd., operators of the Dover Castle, Richard O. B. Lane told the Bench that "it was a pleasant old-time riverside house, to which formerly many people from outside the immediate neighbourhood resorted for recreation. Times, however, had changed, and it was now frequented mainly by men employed in the area. The trade done was a large one, the public accommodation was good, and the licence was ready at all times to supply snacks and light meals for those who wished for them." Mr. E. W. Preston, surveyor to the justices, reported that "it was a poor house, but of comparatively sound structure, and it possessed an excellent tenant, William George August, who kept the premises scrupulously clean." Despite stressing the positive elements of the house, the justices refused to renew the licence.<br />
<br />
Mr. E. W. Preston, surveyor to the justices, reported that the Jolly Waterman "was a tiny riverside house, with a frontage of only 12 feet." Representing Watney, Combe and Reid Ltd. and the tenant, George Harold Wright, Percy Robinson told the Bench that "many people preferred a small licensed house to a large one, just as many people preferred a small hotel, and this particular house supplied an undoubted need in the district." Unfortunately, the justices did not agree and refused to renew this licence.<br />
<br />
The Angel survived this threat to its existence. At the time the premises were owned by Courage & Co. Ltd. The surveyor to the justices, reported that "within a quarter-mile radius of the house there were 21 full licences. It was a very good house in every way, and superior in its accommodation to the two fully-licensed houses in the immediate vicinity." The legal representative for Courage, Sidney Lamb, stated that "the licence had been held by members of one family for 45 years, and much money had recently been spent upon repairs." After consideration, the justices renewed the licence of The Angel. ¹<br />

In August I had a blood test and it showed I had diabetes. <br />
<br />
I have taken this seriously, and gone to the gym now four times a week, and have reduced my blood sugars by 13 points.<br />
<br />
But being diabetic means being added to many databases and tests in the NHS, one being eye tests.<br />
<br />
So, I had my first one this morning, early enough so that Jools couldn't finish her class, get back home and take me to the health centre before nine.<br />
<br />
So, after a lay in to nearly seven, I had time to get dressed and sup my coffee before we had to leave home just after eight.<br />
<br />
Jools dropped me off at the layby at Burgoyne Heights, the sun had just risen, and was about to break over the low cloud covering the French coast.<br />
<br />
My main aim was to snap the castle at sunrise, bathed in warm light, but as the sun rises south east, the sun just caught the battlements and keep on the left hand side.<br />
<br />
Traffic was heavy heading into town, but I had an hour, so walked down the hill, getting closer shots of the Lock and Key of the Kingdom.<br />
<br />
I cross the road, then take the steep hill down Connaught Hill, past the water cistern to the overgrown path leading down towards Buckland.<br />
<br />
Further down the path opened up to a path, with a fine wall on the left hand side, with a satisfying brick pattern mixed in with the flint, and showing how steep the path was.<br />
<br />
Into the houses that rise up from Maison Dieu Road, with parents taking their children to school this last week before Christmas.<br />
<br />
I arrive at the health centre, but have half an hour to kill, so sit on a bench near the bowling green and listen to a podcast, chilly in the frosty morning air. But clear blue skies above and warm sunshine over my shoulder.</p>

I don't know much about the gun but the great tower or keep, is on the far right while St Mary in Castro church is mid right with the Roman Lighthouse partially hidden behind.<br />
