This panel from the monumental destination mural at Paris Gare de Lyon represents Fontainebleau, dominated by its magnificent royal château and formal gardens.

The Château de Fontainebleau began as a medieval hunting residence surrounded by an immense royal forest. It was transformed during the 16th century by King François I, who invited leading Italian artists to create an ambitious palace blending French and Italian Renaissance traditions.

Successive monarchs enlarged and embellished the château, making it a royal residence for approximately eight centuries. Its numerous occupants included Henri II, Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV, followed by Emperor Napoleon I, who called Fontainebleau the “true home of kings.”

The painting shows the palace overlooking geometrically arranged lawns, paths and clipped hedges, recalling Fontainebleau’s extensive formal gardens and park. The town occupies the lower ground on the left, while the surrounding countryside suggests the edge of the great Forest of Fontainebleau.

The château is closely connected with Napoleon’s downfall. After abdicating in 1814, he famously said farewell to his Old Guard from the palace’s Horseshoe Staircase before leaving for exile on Elba. Today, the Palace and Park of Fontainebleau form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This northern section of the Gare de Lyon mural was added in 1980 by Jean-Paul Letellier and the Atelier Genovesio, extending the railway panorama from Lyon northwards to Paris.

A panoramic reconstruction created by carefully stitching together a series of photographs taken inside the Galerie des Fresques at Gare de Lyon in Paris.

The station’s remarkable mural stretches for almost 100 metres and illustrates destinations once reached over the historic Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée railway network. The scenes progress geographically from Paris towards Menton on the Mediterranean coast. Although traditionally called a fresco, the artwork was painted on linen canvases and mounted onto the wall.

This reconstructed section depicts several historic places between Paris and Burgundy:

• Fontainebleau — The Château de Fontainebleau was a residence of French sovereigns from the 12th to the 19th century. Successive monarchs enlarged and transformed it, leaving an extraordinary mixture of medieval, Renaissance and classical architecture. The palace and its park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

• Auxerre — Represented by the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Étienne and its historic townscape. The present cathedral was constructed over several centuries and retains an important 11th-century Romanesque crypt, medieval wall paintings and notable stained glass.

• Vézelay — The hilltop Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine became one of medieval Europe’s great pilgrimage centres. Saint Bernard preached the Second Crusade here in 1146, while Richard the Lionheart and Philip II of France assembled at Vézelay before departing on the Third Crusade in 1190. Its Romanesque basilica and hill are protected by UNESCO.

• Semur-en-Auxois — A dramatically situated medieval Burgundian town distinguished by its fortified gateways, ramparts and surviving towers. Its position above the River Armançon made it an important defensive stronghold.

• Dijon — Represented through its churches, towers and historic Burgundian architecture. Dijon was the capital of the powerful medieval Dukes of Burgundy and developed into an important political, artistic and commercial centre.

The Gare de Lyon mural was produced in several stages. The Mediterranean scenes originated around 1900, further panels were added during the 1920s and 1930s, and the Paris–Lyon section was completed by Jean-Paul Letellier in 1980–81. The gallery was listed as a historic monument in 1984 and underwent extensive restoration before reopening in 2021.
