<br />
The Forest of Fontainebleau is a mixed deciduous forest lying sixty kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Paris. It is located primarily in the arrondissement of Fontainebleau in the southwestern part of the department of Seine-et-Marne. <br />
<br />
Most of the forest lies in the canton of Fontainebleau, although parts of it extend into adjoining cantons, and even as far west as the town of Milly-la-Forêt in the neighboring department, Essonne. <br />
<br />
The hills of Jean de Paris are part of the forest which are known for their stark plateaus and rough terrain.<br />
<br />
Several communes lie within the forest, notably the towns of Fontainebleau and Avon. The forest is huge - it has an area of 250 square kilometres (97 square miles).<br />

<u>Fauna and Flora of the Forest</u><br />
<br />
The most common trees in the forest are: oak (44%), Scots pine (40%), and European beech (10%). Three thousand species of mushrooms have been discovered in the forest. <br />

The forest is also home to approximately seven thousand animal species, five thousand of which are insects.<br />
<br />
Birds of the forest include the great and lesser spotted woodpecker, the great tit and blue tit, the chiffchaff, willow warbler, and blackcap. <br />

Les 🌳pré-bois🌳 dans la forêt de Fontainebleau, figés sous le givre de février, révèlent l’équilibre subtil entre pelouse sèche et jeunes ligneux. Ici, les graminées dominent, offrant un refuge hivernal aux insectes et aux petits mammifères, tandis que les chênes et les aubépines marquent la lente progression de la forêt. On ressent la fragilité de cet écosystème, où chaque élément joue un rôle clé dans la transition entre milieu ouvert et boisé. Pour capturer cette lumière rasante et mettre en valeur la texture du givre, j’ai choisi avec mon drone une légère sous-exposition afin d’accentuer le contraste et la profondeur de la scène.<br />

en Spotlight on frost<br />
The 🌳woodland meadow🌳 in the Fontainebleau forest, frozen under February frost, reveal the subtle balance between dry grassland and young woody plants. Here, grasses dominate, providing a winter refuge for insects and small mammals, while oaks and hawthorns mark the slow progress of the forest. We sense the fragility of this ecosystem, where each element plays a key role in the transition from open to wooded environment. To capture this low-angled light and highlight the texture of the frost, I chose a slight underexposure with my drone to accentuate the contrast and depth of the scene.<br />
