<p>Sunday. Just before eleven.<br />
The pier reaches into the water and disappears. Low cloud, no horizon, no distinction between lake and sky — just a geometric line of old wood and lamp posts fading into haze. No departures. No arrivals. Only the reflections, doing what reflections do.<br />
On the promenade two women stand without speaking. The café has opened. The parasols are closed and will stay that way. Life continues here, but at a reduced pace — coats, brief conversations, the smell of coffee behind glass, the lake present but withdrawn at the edge of everything.<br />
He had come off the S-Bahn ten minutes earlier. The station is scaffolding now, iron frameworks and provisional roofs, signs still pointing in two directions — zum See, Stadtmitte. A functioning place with the atmosphere of suspension. Something between what it was and what it will become, not quite either.</p>
