Church of the Life-Giving Spring

Identification: Church of the Life-Giving Spring of Hatzikyriakio—Zoodochos Pigi Hatzikyriakeiou.

Location: At the end of Marigos Hatzikyriakou Street, postal district 185 39, Piraeus.

Description: The pale ochre basilica has red-tiled roofs, paired arched windows, an elevated forecourt and a separate tall clock tower. The road descends towards the cruise harbour, where part of a Virgin Voyages ship is visible.

History: Residents and Asia Minor refugees founded the parish after 1924, naming it after the famous Life-Giving Spring shrine in Constantinople. Early attempts to build a permanent church were repeatedly stopped because permission had not been granted. After wartime destruction in 1941, restoration and enlargement produced the present building. A large parish community centre was added in 1996.

Soon after the Frankish conquest of the Peloponnese, Andravida (known as Andreville in French) became the residence of the princes of the newly established Principality of Achaea.

Only a few traces survive of the Frankish town. The most visible are the ruins of the Church of Saint Sophia, which was the metropolis of the Catholic bishops down to the 15th century.
