This is a panoramic color photograph of Thessalonikē (aka Thessaloniki or Salonica, Θεσσαλονίκη), Greece with its iconic buildings from a vantage point (the hilltop called Cedar Hill aka Șeyh Su). The Gulf of Thessaloniki (in Greek: Θερμαϊκὸς Κόλπος) extends from the shore.

On the left one sees the mirage of Mt. Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, rising to 2,917 m (9,570 ft): The snow-capped mountain should appear low on the horizon and small-sized in the far distance of 50.3 miles (81 km); instead, the remote Mt. Olympus appears looming strikingly higher and nearer than it should above Thessalonikē because of refraction. The light reflected on the mountain travels through layers of warm and cold air above sea for a long distance, so it gets refracted. The mountain seems to be nearer (magnified) and raised above its true position: in Physics this type of mirage is called “Looming”. Olympus was thought as the 12 gods' everlasting residence, according to Homer. The sacred mountain has long inspired a legion of poets in addition to Homer: Ovid, John Keats, George Gordon (Lord Byron) and many more.
