==============================

In the Serra del Pebrer, east of Gandesa, lies a unique monument—one that is largely unknown and hidden.

During the Battle of the Ebro, the Serra del Pebrer served as a Republican-held position from which part of the XV International Brigade (within the 35th International Division) launched an assault on the fascist-held Pic de la Mort. The attack was unsuccessful and resulted in heavy casualties. Following a week of fighting, the international volunteers entrenched themselves there, and remnants of these fortifications can still be seen today.

Amidst these remains stands a monument—not to the XV International Brigade as a whole, but to an Irish soldier who served in its ranks: Maurice Emmet Ryan, from Limerick. The inscription indicates that he died there in August 1938—that is, after the main assaults on the Pic de la Mort, which had concluded on July 31st.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

An interesting image from the wonderful Eason Collection for today's shot. Edward Road, Whitehead, County Antrim being guarded by five young men from the assault of the photographer! Well they are standing out on the roadway watching the photographer at his work. The little fella with the very big scarf looks a bit overdressed in comparison with his companions?

Photographer: Unknown

Collection: Eason Photographic Collection

Date: between 1900-1939

NLI Ref: EAS_0805

You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

ShutterNut... posted a photo:

All photos are purely for entertainment.
