Galway-area hotel prices are insanely expensive, so I ended up booking the smallest and cheapest semi-double room.

These two dolls crossed the Atlantic with me for this trip:
- Emily Bennett, the best friend of American Girl Molly McIntire, who joined me on her way back to her birthplace London
- Mini-Kirsten (in the box), from the American Girl line as well, joining as Emily's companion and also as a reminder of my late wife Casey

Scarlet Sappho posted a photo:

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/skinnylawyer/55610513504/" title="Dún />

Dún Aonghasa is a prehistoric stone fort, in the form of concentric half-circles along the top of a cliff; it is a favourite destination for island visitors who come by either bicycles or guided tour vans.

I am spending most of this day on Inishmore, the largest and westernmost of the three Aran Islands, using a rental bicycle to cover ground and check out the various sites.

mooncall2012 posted a photo:

Glen of the Downs, Co.Wicklow Ireland, 07-07-2023,

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Lycaenidae
Genus: Neozephyrus
Species: N.quercus

Family Group: Lycaenidae – Blues
When: July to August.
Size: Wingspan around 38mm.
Larval Food Plant: Oak flowers and leaf buds.
Adult Nectar Plant: Oak sap, Ash and Aspen Honey Dew, may occasionally be seen on Brambles, Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum).

Description
The Purple Hairstreak is our commonest Hairstreak but is not often noticed. Males have a purple upper wings whereas females have just a purple patch. The underwings are similar in both sexes, being lilac-brown crossed by a white 'hair-streak' and with an orange eye-spot next to a small tail streamer.

Habitat
Found around oak trees. It is often difficult to locate, due to its habit of flying in the tree canopy; however, the adults are occasionally seen basking at lower levels, on various small trees, shrubs and bracken.

When to see it
July and August

Once the butterfly reaches adulthood, it primarily lives high in the oak canopy. Adult purple hairstreaks rarely feed on flower nectar; instead, they feed on honeydew, which is the sugary waste fluid excreted by aphids. Because ants also fiercely guard and "farm" these same aphids for honeydew, adult butterflies frequently share the same canopy feeding zones with foraging ants.
