It occurs across England, Wales, and much of Scotland, extending into Ireland and throughout much of northern and central Europe. In Britain it can be found from lowland wetlands to upland lochs and pools, although it is generally most abundant in well-vegetated freshwater habitats. Its broad ecological tolerance has helped it remain common and locally numerous across most of its British range.<br /> <br /> Large red damselflies inhabit ponds, lakes, canals, ditches, slow-moving rivers, marshes, bog pools, and garden ponds. They favour waters with abundant emergent and marginal vegetation, where adults can perch and where females lay eggs into plant tissues. A inscrição em latim significa: “Selo Comum do Capítulo da Igreja Catedral de São Patrício de Dublin”. O interior do brasão é rico em simbolismo religioso e histórico.<br /> <br /> No centro inferior, a imagem do próprio padroeiro da Irlanda (São Patrício), tradicionalmente representado com suas vestes clericais e segurando um cajado de bispo. Na parte superior, há divisões com brasões, emblemas da tradição eclesiástica anglicana. (A Catedral é anglicana) <br /> <br /> A CATEDRAL<br /> Fundada em 1191, é um testemunho da história da Irlanda! Diz a tradição que a Catedral foi construída no local exato onde São Patrício (o Santo padroeiro da Irlanda), batizava os primeiros convertidos ao Cristianismo no século V (por volta de 450), utilizando as águas de um poço que existia ali, com água do rio Poddle, que ainda corre debaixo da terra. Inicialmente, uma pequena Igreja de madeira, e em 1191, reconstruída em pedra. Entre 1220 e 1260, ganhou as estruturas que vemos hoje. Após a “Reforma Protestante” na Inglaterra, um processo irregular entre 1536 e 1564, desencadeada pelo Rei Henrique VIII, a Catedral tornou-se Anglicana!<br /> <br /> O famoso escritor Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), autor do célebre livro “As Viagens de Gulliver”, está sepultado na Catedral, juntamente com sua amada Esther Johnson, a quem ele chamava de “Stella”. A Catedral foi totalmente restaurada na década de 1860, graças a uma enorme doação de Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness (1798-1868). E em 1492, nascia a expressão “to chance your arm”, criada dentro da Catedral!!! A Escola Coral, fundada em 1432, forneceu muitos dos seus membros para participar da primeira apresentação do “Messias” de Handel, em 1742. Ao lado da Catedral, há um grande e belo Parque, gramados, fontes, jardins...<br /> <br /> A EXPRESSÃO “TO CHANCE YOUR ARM/CHANCING YOUR ARM” - Correr risco calculado, tentar a sorte/não temer.<br /> A expressão “Chancing your arm” (correr risco calculado/arriscar-se/tentar a sorte) é de origem irlandesa, e foi criada dentro da Catedral! A origem remonta a uma lendária história de 1492, durante uma violenta rixa entre duas famílias nobres de Condes; os Butlers (de Ormond) e os Fitzgeralds (de Kildare). Após uma briga sem precedente, Sir James Butler refugiou-se na “Sala do Chapter” da Catedral, temendo ser morto, recusou-se a sair. O Conde Gerald Fitzgerald, para provar sua boa fé, fez um buraco na porta (em formato de “fechadura”) e estendeu o braço, correndo o risco (chancing his arm) de ter o braço decepado, ao oferecer um aperto de mãos como sinal de paz. Os Butlers - os refugiados, aceitou o gesto e a paz foi selada.
