The story begins in 1932 when Colman Mangan from Dublin arrived as a boarder in Rockwell College which is located a few kilometres from Cashel in Co. Tipperary. Exploring the grounds he quickly discovered the 23-acre lake and boathouse which contained a number of boats used by the students during their leisure time. During the summer of 1933 he told his elder brother Kevin of the facilities and the elder sibling, who was at the time captain of Dolphin Rowing Club in Ringsend, Dublin, suggested that the school should form a schools crew to compete at Dublin Metropolitan Regatta in 1934. As the regatta was to take place in Ringsend, he offered the use of a boat and the club facilities.<br />
<br />
During 1934, 1936 and 1939, Metropolitan Regatta was held in Ringsend. Thanks to the Mangan family connections, the school were always allowed base themselves in Dolphin Rowing Club and borrow the club boats for training and competition. In the alternate years, and after 1940, Metropolitan Regatta was held in Islandbridge. As a result, the school required a new base for racing at Trinity and Metropolitan Regattas. The latter involved the boys decamping from Tipperary a week before the event and basing themselves in the Capital to train on the Liffey. This was readily provided by DUBC who offered them full access to the boathouse for training and racing. On one occasion Rockwell were drawn to meet DUBC in the heat of one of the maiden races. When the question of who would use the old boat and who would be allowed compete in the much more modern boat arose, there was only one answer – Rockwell were the guests and we allowed race the newer boat.<br />

<p>There seems to be some sort of optical illusion where a ship viewed from the top of the Putland hill appears to be much closer to shore than when you get down to the beach.<br />
<br />
When you get down to Strand road the ship appears to be much further out (even though you are nearly a kilometer closer to it). This is probably because it appears to be on the horizon, whereas from this higher vantage point there is sea behind the ship and it does not appear to be on the horizon.</p>
