Standing on the banks of the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, looking across towards Porto, you are witnessing a city whose history has always been closely connected to the river flowing through it.

In the foreground lie the traditional barcos rabelos, the wooden boats that once played an essential role in Portugal's famous port wine trade.

For centuries, these remarkable vessels transported barrels of wine from the vineyards of the Douro Valley downstream to the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

It was a demanding and sometimes dangerous journey. Long before modern roads, railways and dams transformed the region, the Douro was a wild river, with strong currents, rapids and treacherous rocks. Navigating it required considerable skill, experience and courage.

The rabelos were specially designed for these conditions. Their shallow wooden hulls, large square sails and long steering oars allowed crews to navigate a river that was not always forgiving.

Today, the surviving boats are reminders of an extraordinary chapter in Portuguese commercial and maritime history.

Behind them rises the historic city of Porto, its buildings climbing the steep northern bank of the Douro. Generations of merchants, sailors, craftsmen and families helped shape this remarkable city, whose prosperity became closely connected to the international trade in port wine.

And to the right stands one of Porto's most recognisable landmarks: the magnificent Ponte de Dom Luís I.

Completed in 1886 and designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig, the double-deck iron bridge became a symbol of the engineering achievements of the nineteenth century. Its enormous arch still connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, just as the river below has connected people, commerce and cultures for centuries.

What I particularly love about this view is the contrast between the different periods of history.

The traditional wooden boats represent the centuries when the river was the main transport route. The iron bridge represents the industrial age. And the city behind them continues to evolve, adapting to modern life while preserving much of its extraordinary character.

I took this photograph in the late afternoon, when the setting sun illuminated the historic buildings while the rabelos were already resting in the shadows.

For me, that contrast captures something essential about Porto.

It is a city that continues to move forward, without completely losing sight of the people, traditions and achievements that made it what it is today.

It is the world's first major bridge made of cast iron. Opened in 1781 in Shropshire, England, it marked a massive turning point in global engineering, architecture, and the Industrial Revolution.

Kingsland Bridge in Shrewsbury provides an interesting perspective when framed by the high stone boundary walls along the River Severn. Built in 1882 by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company, this Grade II listed iron arch bridge carries local traffic across the river, though the narrow footpaths and alleyways beneath offer a much quieter view of passers-by taking an autumn walk.

Above the dark sweep of the Rhine, the great arches rise like the ribbed vaulting of a submerged cathedral, holding the weight of centuries in their rusted marrow. The current moves below in relentless silence, catching the amber torches of the bridge and melting them into shivering ribbons of copper and violet upon the water.

In the stillness of the hour, the city across the river retreats into shadows, leaving only iron, tide, and the solitary beacon of a distant moon to watch over the passage. It stands not merely as a crossing of stone and steel, but as an enduring sentinel suspended between the living currents and the deep quiet of the abyss.
