I enjoyed my Sunday roast, followed up with unnecessary icecream, and we seemed to spend a positive lifetime in the place. Armstrong Siddeley was formed in 1919 following its purchase by Armstrong Whitworth and production was devoted to aircraft engines both before and during WWII. Sir John placed the castle in the care of the nation and part of the first floor of the gatehouse is devoted to a display of the history of Siddeley's aircraft and automobiles. On at least two previous visits (the entrance being on the other side of the site) we have arrived at the gatehouse more or less just in time for its closing, so we haven't made it upsrairs for several years. After this, the estate was divided up between a group of Parliamentarians and after the Restoration, it was granted to the Hyde family, Earls of Rochester and Clarendon. The castle remained in the family's possession until 1937 when it was purchased by Sir John Davenport Siddeley who placed it in the care of the nation. At either end are the initials RL (for Robert Leicester presumably) an across the middle is Robert Dudley's family motto, Droit et Loyal (upright and loyal). Fortunately, his description is very detailed, and along with other research made recreation possible. Now over 20 years old, it's looking pretty established.<br /> This is one of a pair of loggias at either end of the high terrace above the Elizabethan Garden.</p>
