<p>Leaping forward several hundred years as the castle was purchased in 1937 by Sir John Davenport Siddeley, owner of Siddeley-Deasy, a manufacturer of fine motor cars at the top end of the market. Armstrong Siddeley was formed in 1919 following its purchase by Armstrong Whitworth and production was devoted to aircraft engines both before and during WWII. Sir John placed the castle in the care of the nation and part of the first floor of the gatehouse is devoted to a display of the history of Siddeley's aircraft and automobiles. Their bonnet mascot was a sphinx, which was used from 1912 until 1960, undergoing numerous design changes.</p>

<p>Another shot of the extravagant overmantel in Leicester's Gatehouse. I suppose a fireplace was the central focus of any room after dusk (until the advent of TV...).</p>

<p>One side of the entrance to Leicester's Gatehouse. On at least two previous visits (the entrance being on the other side of the site) we have arrived at the gatehouse more or less just in time for its closing, so we haven't made it upsrairs for several years. Rather suprisingly, they have even installed a lift.</p>

<p>This is Leicester's Gatehouse, one of very few buildings to have survived the Civil War. After this, the estate was divided up between a group of Parliamentarians and after the Restoration, it was granted to the Hyde family, Earls of Rochester and Clarendon. The castle remained in the family's possession until 1937 when it was purchased by Sir John Davenport Siddeley who placed it in the care of the nation. Part of the first floor of the gatehouse is devoted to a display of the history of Siddeley's aircraft and automobiles.</p>

<p>This is the very elaborate overmantel in what is now one of the main chambers of Leicester's Gatehouse, built in 1571. At either end are the initials RL (for Robert Leicester presumably) an across the middle is Robert Dudley's family motto, Droit et Loyal (upright and loyal). <p>Another ruined part of the castle, this is Lunn's Tower, much damage having been inflicted during the Civil War.</p>

<p>Some more of Kenilworth Castle, visited to see the Wicked Game sculpture exhibition, though we visit anyway as we're only a few miles away. This is part of Leicester's Building, not at nightfall but almost midday.</p>

<p>This is the Elizabethan Garden, recreated in 2009, based on a letter written by Robert Langham on 'The Magnificent Pageants presented before Queen Elizabeth at Kenilworth Castle in 1575'. Fortunately, his description is very detailed, and along with other research made recreation possible. Now over 20 years old, it's looking pretty established.<br />
This is one of a pair of loggias at either end of the high terrace above the Elizabethan Garden.</p>

At the far end is the aviary in Italianate style, which has birds. In front is a marble fountain with two 'Athlants' or Atlas figures holding the world on their shoulders, with water spouts. The water falls into the bowl of the fountain with an eight-sided base with classical scenes of Neptune and other watery characters.</p>

The whole pageant (which lasted 19 days) was intended to persuade the Queen to marry Robert Dudley and in addition to the garden he had also lavished money on what is now known as Leicester's Gatehouse, exclusively for her use. She could be very demanding, however, and having admired the new gardens, regretted that they could not be seen from her quarters in the gatehouse. So keen was Dudley to appease her that he had new flowerbeds created overnight.</p>

In 1253, John’s successor, Henry III gave Kenilworth to his sister Eleanor and her powerful husband, Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. De Montfort fell at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, but his son, Simon the younger, subsequently held Kenilworth against the king during an extraordinary six-month siege – the longest in English medieval history. The garrison eventually surrendered to the king on 13 December 1266.</p>

<p>This is just part of the Norman keep, the oldest part of the castle. In about 1120 Henry I granted land from his manor of Stoneleigh to his chamberlain and treasurer, Geoffrey de Clinton, possibly to counter the influence of his neighbour the Earl of Warwick. De Clinton retained the southern part of the land for a castle, park and mere, and the sandstone keep dates from that period. A serious structure, the keep's walls are 14 feet wide.</p>

<p>Much of the castle is built from local pink sandstone which is susceptible to erosion by wind and rain. The castle has mostly been a ruin since the Civil War, so it has withstood the elements fairly well - but must be a serious maintenance challenge for English Heritage.</p>

<p>This is what remains of the Great Hall, inside which the Wicked Game installation was laid out. The castle was first built in the 1120s and has been a royal castle for most of its history, as it was expanded by King John, John of Gaunt and Henry V. In 1563 Elizabeth I granted it to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who converted it into a lavish palace. Elizabeth visited four times during ‘progresses’ through her realm, and her visit in 1575 was the longest she made to any courtier during her reign. Dudley’s embellishments to the castle and its grounds were doubtless intended to impress her and included a new gatehouse and a four-storey tower block (now known as Leicester’s Building), which was designed specifically for the queen’s use in 1572 and improved for her next visit in 1575. It was severely damaged during the Civil War and has mostly been a ruin ever since.</p>

<p>On what would have been the first floor of the Great Hall is this decorated fireplace, there are generations of graffiti carved into the sandstone. 'EE' visited in 1833 and had time to carve beautiful initials.</p>
