<p>Today we met up with Cat’s friends from uni and her children at Kenilworth Castle, followed by a pub lunch. I enjoyed my Sunday roast, followed up with unnecessary icecream, and we seemed to spend a positive lifetime in the place. Given how filling lunch was, Juliana and I had cheese on toast as an evening meal.</p>

<p>Leaping forward several hundred years as the castle was purchased in 1937 by Sir John Davenport Siddeley, owner of Siddeley-Deasy, a manufacturer of fine motor cars at the top end of the market. Armstrong Siddeley was formed in 1919 following its purchase by Armstrong Whitworth and production was devoted to aircraft engines both before and during WWII. Sir John placed the castle in the care of the nation and part of the first floor of the gatehouse is devoted to a display of the history of Siddeley's aircraft and automobiles. Their bonnet mascot was a sphinx, which was used from 1912 until 1960, undergoing numerous design changes.</p>

<p>Another shot of the extravagant overmantel in Leicester's Gatehouse. I suppose a fireplace was the central focus of any room after dusk (until the advent of TV...).</p>

<p>This is Leicester's Gatehouse, one of very few buildings to have survived the Civil War. After this, the estate was divided up between a group of Parliamentarians and after the Restoration, it was granted to the Hyde family, Earls of Rochester and Clarendon. The castle remained in the family's possession until 1937 when it was purchased by Sir John Davenport Siddeley who placed it in the care of the nation. Part of the first floor of the gatehouse is devoted to a display of the history of Siddeley's aircraft and automobiles.</p>

<p>This is the very elaborate overmantel in what is now one of the main chambers of Leicester's Gatehouse, built in 1571. At either end are the initials RL (for Robert Leicester presumably) an across the middle is Robert Dudley's family motto, Droit et Loyal (upright and loyal). <p>Some more of Kenilworth Castle, visited to see the Wicked Game sculpture exhibition, though we visit anyway as we're only a few miles away. This is part of Leicester's Building, not at nightfall but almost midday.</p>

<p>This is the Elizabethan Garden, recreated in 2009, based on a letter written by Robert Langham on 'The Magnificent Pageants presented before Queen Elizabeth at Kenilworth Castle in 1575'. Fortunately, his description is very detailed, and along with other research made recreation possible. Now over 20 years old, it's looking pretty established.<br />
This is one of a pair of loggias at either end of the high terrace above the Elizabethan Garden.</p>

At the far end is the aviary in Italianate style, which has birds. In front is a marble fountain with two 'Athlants' or Atlas figures holding the world on their shoulders, with water spouts. The water falls into the bowl of the fountain with an eight-sided base with classical scenes of Neptune and other watery characters.</p>

The whole pageant (which lasted 19 days) was intended to persuade the Queen to marry Robert Dudley and in addition to the garden he had also lavished money on what is now known as Leicester's Gatehouse, exclusively for her use. She could be very demanding, however, and having admired the new gardens, regretted that they could not be seen from her quarters in the gatehouse. So keen was Dudley to appease her that he had new flowerbeds created overnight.</p>

<p>The oldest part of the castle, the Norman keep was built in the 12th century. In 1253, Henry III gave Kenilworth to his sister Eleanor and her powerful husband, Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. De Montfort fell at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, but his son, Simon the younger, subsequently held Kenilworth against the king during an extraordinary six-month siege – the longest in English medieval history. The garrison eventually surrendered to the king on 13th December 1266. It suffered more damage during the Civil War but is still standing.</p>

<p>This is just part of the Norman keep, the oldest part of the castle. In about 1120 Henry I granted land from his manor of Stoneleigh to his chamberlain and treasurer, Geoffrey de Clinton, possibly to counter the influence of his neighbour the Earl of Warwick. De Clinton retained the southern part of the land for a castle, park and mere, and the sandstone keep dates from that period. A serious structure, the keep's walls are 14 feet wide.</p>
