<p>Iron Age (c. 8th-5th Century BCE): The summit served as a small defensive hillfort, with remnants of ditches and banks visible, overlooking the valley. The Norse later called the valley "Borgar dalr" (valley of the fortress).<br />
Roman Period (c. 1st-5th Century AD): Roman pottery found suggests trade, though the fort was likely abandoned earlier.<br />
19th Century Quarrying: The slopes were heavily quarried for green slate, creating the unique terraces and spoil tips seen today, and shaping the landscape significantly.</p>

<p>My walk this morning takes me from Elterwater to New Dungeon Ghyll the views are fantastic and the ground relatively easy. On my way back I will take the higher ground for more detailed views of the valley.<br />
