<p>I used the Polaroid decay method with this shot, immersing it in water for a few weeks until it starts to change. Usually I wait until they’ve dried out before scanning but this time I liked how it looked while it was still wet.<br />

<p>Coniston Water lies at a rare quiet. The surface holds the sky in a perfect, unbroken reflection. <br />
It reminds me of what Earth Day asks of us. Not grand gestures, just care. To keep it safe, and to understand that places like this are not only beautiful, but fragile in their quiet way.<br />

<p>There weren't many other people on the lake apart from the pleasure boats. The fine weather had brought out quite a few poeple in to the towns but it was still cold and exposed on the Lake <br />
<br />
The big house in the background is called Huyton Hill and was a country house built by the industrialist Crossley Family, it then it became a public school until 1969, then holiday flats.</p>

<p>Esthwaite Water, English Lake District.<br />

The plan on this morning was to head up Loughrigg and take a pano looking west up Langdale bathed in morning light. As such it required a decent sunrise with light cloud in the sky to the west, to provide some interest, and preferably mist in the valley. I set off at 4.30 from Far Sawry, where I was staying, and immediately had the photographers curse, a strong bout of ‘am I going to the right place’? This persisted all the way to Clappers Gate, where there was no mist on the Brathay and it was crystal clear to the west, as much as I could tell. I turned around and headed back the way I had come to the head of the lake at Esthwaite Water, my logic being that there was cloud to the east, it was still, and so I might get some light in the sky and decent reflections.<br />
<br />
As I approached I could see local mist and my spirits lifted, I’ve shot here before and I know how beautiful it can be in such conditions. I wasn’t disappointed. I spent an hour or so increasing the shutter count on my camera by 159 images. <br />
<br />
In many ways this is the easiest image I took across to the trees that sit on a small headland. The mist came and went but seemed to cling to the east shore, or rather the base of the ridge behind hiding it and Near Sawry (you wouldn’t know I was in a Lake District valley) and occasionally spilling onto the lake. There wasn’t a huge amount of colour in the sky apart from maybe this brief moment when the amazing cloud formation got tinged yellow and red (Undulate Clouds). I took a 14 sec exposure to smooth out the reflections, it wasn’t really necessary but it soften the scene and complemented the pastel colours. There was no wind so the clouds didn’t move so they retained a lot of texture in any event.<br />
<br />
And so, if all my plans were to turn out this bad, bring them on!</p>
