<p><u>The Postcard</u><br />

A Valentine's Series postcard featuring the Feathers Hotel in Ludlow. Note the Feathers Hotel sign for Posting House and Billiards.<br />
<br />
Posting houses were a house or inn where horses were kept and could be rented. Postriders could also be hired to deliver mail and packages along a route, meeting up at various places according to a schedule. Posting houses functioned as the post offices of their day.<br />
<br />
The card was posted in Dudley using a ½d. stamp on Wednesday the 9th. October 1912. It was sent to:<br />

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br />

<br />
<u>The Feathers Hotel</u><br />
<br />
The Feathers Hotel, located at 21, Bull Ring Ludlow, was Grade 1 Listed in 1954, and is one of the best known of the approximately 500 listed buildings in the town.<br />
<br />
The historic inn with its imposing half-timbered frontage was constructed in 1619, over an earlier core, for Rees Jones, a practising attorney from Pembrokeshire who had come to Ludlow in order to pursue his profession at the "Council of the Marches". <br />
<br />
John Newman describes the hotel as a "prodigy" of Tudor architecture which it is noted for its Jacobean furnishings. <br />
<br />
The timber façade has motifs of the Prince of Wales's feathers, from which the inn's name derives.<br />
<br />
When Rees Jones' house was converted to an inn in 1670, alterations made included a balcony which was added for "electioneering." The Cambrian Archaeological Association said in 1899:<br />

"This is much the most picturesque <br />
of all the half-timbered houses now <br />
remaining in Ludlow. <br />
In adapting it for use as a hotel, <br />
none of the old work has been <br />
tampered with."<br />
<br />
The New York Times named it:<br />

"The most handsome inn<br />
in the world".<br />

-- <u>Architecture of the Hotel</u><br />
<br />
The front façade dates to the early 17th. century, with a timber-frame and plaster; brick; double-depth plain tile roof, with three gables to the front. <br />
<br />
The hotel is three storeys high excluding the cellar, and has a three-bay plan, with moulded bays and carved mullions and transoms, along with cast diamond glazing. <br />
<br />
The central entrance contains a porch with pillars and consoles supporting the 1st. floor balcony. The studded plank door is the original. <br />
<br />
The ground floor room to right of the entrance has panelling, mantelpiece and wall paintings, and rooms on the first floor have panelling, plaster ceilings and over mantels, with rustic bare Elizabethan timber-framing and ceiling beams in several of the rooms. The mantle pieces are richly carved. <br />
<br />
The dark oak panelling reaches the ceiling of the dining room. The hotel's windows open towards churches and Ludlow Castle. The chimes of the church tower are clearly heard in the hotel rooms; the bells also ring at midnight and 4 AM, which must greatly please the hotel guests. <br />
<br />
As of 2007, the hotel had 40 en-suite rooms. Twelve of the rooms were renovated in the late 2000's in the Georgian style, and several of the rooms contain four poster beds.<br />
<br />
Among the other features noted in the hotel is the lock plate with inscriptions of the name of Rees Jones. The lintels of the doors have fine carvings.<br />
<br />
Robert Pancheri, famous for his wooden architectural sculptures and carvings for churches and public buildings, was involved in the restoration of the wooden carvings on the Feathers Hotel. He received a Civic Trust Award in 1970 for his work on the hotel.<br />
<br />
-- <u>Rivalry with The Bull</u><br />
<br />
On the opposite side of the street is the Bull Hotel, and the two hostelries partake in a tug-of-war competition every Boxing Day across the street itself.<br />
<br />
<u>A Holy War</u><br />
<br />
So what else happened on the day that Sam posted the card?<br />
<br />
Well, on the 9th. October 1912, King Nicholas of Montenegro called on his subjects to join in a "holy war" against Turkey, as Detchitch fell to the Montenegrins.<br />
<br />
<u>Frank C. Bostock</u><br />
<br />
Also on that day, the London Times published an obituary for Frank C. Bostock, who had died the day before on the 8th. October 1912.<br />
<br />
Francis Charles Bostock was an English entrepreneur and animal trainer, who represented the touring section of the Bostock and Wombwell Menagerie. <br />
<br />
He toured Europe and America, and in the latter he was known as "The Animal King". On his death he was called "England's Greatest Showman."<br />
<br />
-- <u>Frank C. Bostock - The Early Years</u><br />
<br />
Frank was born on the 10th. September 1866, the seventh child of James William Bostock and his wife Emma Wombwell. His parents had married in 1852 when James was 38 and Emma was 18.<br />
<br />
James had joined Wombwell's Travelling Menagerie as a wagoner and animal handler in 1838. He then became the menagerie's agent, obtaining Royal Command Performances at Windsor Castle in 1847 and 1854. <br />
<br />
The travelling show became Bostock & Wombwell. When James died in 1878, his widow Emma continued as manager and owner of the show. Bostock's older brother, Edward Henry Bostock, bought out the show in 1889.<br />
<br />
-- <u>Frank C. Bostock in America</u><br />
<br />
Frank Bostock set up his own show in 1889, and in 1893 he made his first trip to America, partnering with the Ferari Brothers, beginning with a semi-permanent show at Flatbush, Brooklyn. The show contained three lions and one of the first boxing kangaroos. <br />
<br />
From 1894 to 1903 Frank vied with Carl Hagenbeck for prime spots on Coney Island. Bostock claimed that he averaged audiences of 16,000, whereas Hagenbeck had "only" 8,000.<br />
<br />
On the 12th. April 1901, Frank was seriously injured by Rajah, his Bengal tiger, while on tour in Indianapolis. The tiger had attacked and killed a young keeper called Nielsen a few weeks earlier. <br />
<br />
During his time in America, Frank befriended Theodore Roosevelt, who gave Bostock a pet puma named Alice, who had become too big to handle.<br />
<br />

<br />
Renowned mainly as a lion trainer, Bostock is credited with discovering that lions react oddly to chairs (due to their legs) and that therefore a chair can be used to control a lion. <br />
<br />
In 1908 he introduced the "big cage" into circus acts. <br />
<br />
His escapades included capturing an escaped lion in the sewers of Birmingham. <br />
<br />
In 1908 he brought American-style razzamatazz to a show Bostock's Arena and Jungle at Earls Court. He toured the show in 1908, presenting it in Sheffield. <br />
<br />
In America Frank had encountered the new craze of roller skating, and was among the first to bring this type of show to Britain. In 1910 he was owner of the Sheffield Skating Rink, and when the craze faded that year, he converted the rink to house his Jungle show.<br />
<br />
-- <u>The Death of Frank C. Bostock</u><br />
<br />
Frank died at Kensington Mansions in the Earls Court district of London on the 8th. October 1912, and was laid to rest at Abney Park Cemetery in London on the 14th. October. <br />
<br />
A unique tombstone featuring a sculpture of a reclining lion was added the following year. The tomb echoes the design of George Wombwell in Highgate Cemetery. <br />
<br />
At the time of Bostock's death he owned over 1,000 animals, along with amusement parks in Europe, America, South Africa and Australia.<br />

<br />
Neil Munro gives a satirical account of a marriage ceremony conducted in the lions' cage at Boston & Wombwell's Menagerie while it was based in New City Road, Glasgow, in his Erchie Macpherson story "A Menagerie Marriage." It was first published in the Glasgow Evening News of the 18th. April 1910.</p>

It was one of only 18 churches given a five-star rating in England's Thousand Greatest Churches by Simon Jenkins (1999) and is described as the "cathedral of the Marches". It is the 13th most popular free visitor attraction in the West Midlands, with 70,000 visitors per year.<br />

15/04/54 GV I Parish Church. Mainly C15, with C13 and C14 fragments. Restored by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, and Sir A Blomfield. Ashlar sandstone; coursed rubble; lead roof.<br />

Nave and aisles, transept, chancel, chancel chapels and north vestry. C13 south doorway; C14 hexagonal south porch, north aisle and north and south transepts; C15 features include the nave and arcade, with clerestory and rich timber roof; chancel, transepts and crossing; crossing tower.<br />

INTERIOR: c1447 stalls, altered C19, with fine misericords; rood screen; stained glass, much restored; monuments to Sir Robert Townshend 1581 and wife, Edmund Walter 1592 and wife, Edward Woties 1635, Ambrosia Sydney 1580, Theophilus Salway 1760, Sir John Brydgeman 1637 and wife, Dame Mary Eure 1612 and husband 1616. The largest parish church in Shropshire, 203ft long with tower 135ft tall.<br />
