The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman Conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England.<br /> <br /> The castle was enlarged by Roger Mortimer in the 14th century and was involved in the War of the Roses, being an important stronghold of Yorkist authority. Distinctive among the buildings is The Ascent with it's striking sloped shape. Hotels and office buildings are mixed in along with residential. The large, flat building is the IRS Service Center.
