I bet the drivers all loved it when they got back to the depot to do the clean-up ....<br /> <br /> I did not recognise this Whittle Contour, as it had only been re-registered a few days earlier, and I couldn't get closer to it to try and identify it, so I made do with the picture, and waited for its details to appear. It had been GBB 254 here, one of five Bedford YNTs delivered to the firm in 1984. I thought the loss of the plate might have meant it was on its way, but it remained here for another three years. After passing through several hands in later years, it returned to Shropshire in 1996, with R&amp;B Travel near Ludlow, where it would spend the rest of its days. The image is a glossy real photograph. <br /> <br /> The card was posted in Bournemouth using two ½d. stamps on Wednesday the 20th. May 1925. The postmark states:<br /> <br /> 'London Defended.<br /> Stadium Wembley.<br /> 6 - 27 May<br /> 8.30pm.'<br /> <br /> The card was sent to:<br /> <br /> Miss Kathleen Glass,<br /> 11, Crowndale Road,<br /> Knowle,<br /> Bristol.<br /> <br /> The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br /> <br /> &quot;Wednesday.<br /> Dear Kathleen,<br /> We are still being<br /> favoured with fine<br /> weather and <br /> thoroughly enjoying<br /> ourselves.<br /> Just going to have<br /> a game of tennis.<br /> Love,<br /> Audrey.&quot;<br /> <br /> <u>A Disastrous Flooding in Australia</u><br /> <br /> So what else happened on the day that Audrey posted the card to Kathleen?<br /> <br /> Well, on the 20th. May 1925, the Murrumbidgee River flooded in Australia, killing eight people.<br /> <br /> <u>Aleksey Tupolev</u><br /> <br /> The day also marked the birth in Moscow of Aleksey Tupolev, who was a Soviet and Russian aircraft designer whose developments included the Tupolev Tu-134 twin-engined jet airliner and the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144.<br /> <br /> Aleksey, who was the son of Soviet aeronautical engineer Andrei Tupolev, died in 2001.<br /> <br /> <u>Elias M. Ammons</u><br /> <br /> Elias M. Broad Gate, Ludlow, Shropshire." /></a></p> <p>I felt quite sorry in the end for the young chap driving this truck and trying to thread it through the narrow entrance of the 13th century Broad Gate into Ludlow. <br /> He was there for quite some time, grinding backwards and forwards trying to position himself and his load of what looked like plasterboard to squeeze between the protective wooden bollards, while enduring the laughter from the tables outside the pub.<br /> <br /> He didn't make it, and I could hear him for at least another hour, still grinding and crashing gears around town as he tried to find a way through the ancient, often one-way streets.<br /> <br /> By coincidence I was there at his destination - down the hill just above Dinham Bridge, only a few hundred yards away - when he finally arrived. <br /> His three or four work colleagues, much older men, had obviously heard him all about town as they waited for him and they didn't half have a joke at his expense! <br /> I don't think he'll ever live it down.<br /> <br /> (And a rather alarmingly leaning chimney on the right of the drum towers!)<br /> Broad Gate, Ludlow, Shropshire</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/people/163363024@N04/">Banburyshire Photos</a> posted a photo:</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/163363024@N04/54878953114/" title="The Angel, Ludlow, Shropshire"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54878953114_ffae2ef9bd_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="The Angel, Ludlow, Shropshire" /></a></p> <p>Built in the early 16th century The Angel was one of the town's premier coaching inns until the arrival of the railway in 1852. It is noted that in 1822 the Aurora coach took 27 hours to reach London; I don't know if that was a good or bad record! <br /> In 1802, Lord Admiral Nelson was given the 'freedom of the town' after the Battle of the Nile. He stayed at the inn and addressed the crowds below from one of the windows.
