The perfect place to take your maiden aunts!<br /> It closed in 2016 and was replaced by the trendier local chain, Wildwood, but that too has now closed. One of its 14th-century owners, Roger Mortimer, helped his mistress Queen Isabella, in the overthrow of her husband King Edward II. In 1473, the famous 'Princes in the Tower', the Prince of Wales and his brother were held here before their mysterious death in the Tower of London. In 1502 Prince Arthur, Henry VII's son and heir to the throne, died at Ludlow. Largely forgotten by history, he died unexpectedly whilst still in his teens, propelling his younger brother Henry to the throne - the infamous Henry Vlll.<br /> The castle towers over the River Teme and overlooks the wild countryside of the Welsh Marches (borders).<br /> Seen from the path that climbs (steeply at first) from Dinham Bridge to the open common of Whitcliffe with its extensive views over Ludlow.<br /> <br /> I stood here for about 40 minutes waiting for some light...just about worth it but ended up running out of time to go in the place.</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/people/163363024@N04/">Banburyshire Photos</a> posted a photo:</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/163363024@N04/54765029691/" title="The lower end of elegant Broad Street, Ludlow, Shropshire."><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54765029691_89a54501c9_m.jpg" width="240" height="149" alt="The lower end of elegant Broad Street, Ludlow, Shropshire." /></a></p> <p>Looking to the 13th century Broad Gate, the only remaining town gate, although this facade was extended and given a fashionable 'gothic' treatment in the 18th century. <br /> Beyond it can be seen the trees that that are the edge of the wild and very beautiful Welsh border country that sweeps down to the River Teme.<br /> It was a shame the building on the right was covered with scaffolding. A mid 18th century facade (but with an older core hidden within), the owners obviously fell in love with 'Venetian' windows when they were looking at the Pattern books of the day, as all eight on the facade are of that design. Rather over egging the pudding but one of Ludlow's favourite little quirks!<br /> <br /> Broad Street is a quiet thoroughfare of medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings although many of the latter are little more than facade deep, hiding behind their fashionable brick frontages are much older timber-framed properties. This was in 2019 when operated by Freightliner. The service will continue its journey to its destination of Radlett on Monday morning.</p>
