A 90-minute-late edition of the daily northbound Coast Starlight blasts upgrade, with just under two miles of the climb remaining to the crest of the Southern Cascades at Grass Lake. At this location just north of the long-removed siding of Cougar, the train is moments away from reaching the 5,000-foot-above-sea-level contour, and is already higher than the top of the better known Cascade Summit at Pengra Pass in Oregon, which this train will cross in several more hours. The picturesque view was to the northeast, with the majestic summit and peak of Mount Shasta. The morning sunlight seemingly bathed the mountainside to my front. The rest of the image composition was aligning myself with the nearby street and the evergreens on both sides. Union Pacific 6810 is on the point of the ZLCTM as it climbs the base of Mount Shasta near Hotlum, California. <br /> <br /> The 43 hour journey along the I-5 Corridor started in the early morning hours of July 31st at LATC (Los Angeles Transportation Center). The ZLCTM traversed the infamous Tehachapi Pass as well as the Central and Sacramento Valley’s before beginning the climb into the Southern Cascade Mountains. This picturesque setting is something that I happened to turn around to look at along the hiking trail. The rest of the image was moving around until I had much more of a wide opening with the trees, looking down the mountain I was on, and then across the valley to the ridges and peaks with Mount Shasta. I chose to angle my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera slightly downward so I could create more of a sweeping view looking across to Mount Shasta off the distance. Although the main services were the Coast Daylight, Shasta Daylight, and San Joaquin Daylight, there was also a smaller route called the Sacramento Daylight. On top of this, SP had launched a few in Texas, the Sunbeam, Hustler, and Owl, however these were less known and shorter lived trains. The creation of Amtrak saw the end of these iconic streamliners, and eventually the Coast and Shasta Daylight routes were merged to create the Coast Starlight. However, a couple changes were made: the new route would not go to San Francisco, but would rather continue north out of San Jose, and an extension was made for the train to connect all the way to Seattle from Portland. Amtrak had the commuter operations take care of the passengers going to San Francisco until Caltrain was formed in 1985 to take over all passenger operations between San Jose and San Francisco.<br /> <br /> Over fifty years after the end of the Daylights and nearly thirty after the demise of the Southern Pacific, passenger trains looks a lot different through the Cascades now. On this day, Amtrak 14 rolls along the Upper Klamath Lake in the late morning. Standing tall behind the train is Mt. Shasta, which the train had been going around only a couple hours prior. The orange and red streak has been gone for decades, long replaced with a streak of grey with red, white, and blue stripes. This picturesque location is situated within the Shasta–Trinity National Forest, featuring Castle Lake and a backdrop of a distant ridge and peaks, including Mount Shasta. I liked the layered look present in this image and used the nearby plant life and evergreen trees as foreground interest for a look beyond. At an elevation of 14,179 ft (4,322 m), it is the second-highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth-highest in the state. Mount Shasta has an estimated volume of 85 cubic miles (350 cubic kilometers), which makes it the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. Mount Shasta is the backdrop that seemingly rises into the skies above. This is located in Shasta–Trinity National Forest. I chose to angle my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera slightly downward, so that I could bring the horizon and mountain peak higher into the image. The setting is to the southeast with a view across a grassy meadow that is likely a portion of the dried up lakebed. What I wanted to capture with this image was to get down behind some of the nearby grasses, angling my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera slightly downward, and bring the horizon a little higher into the image. I wanted the distant forest with hillsides and Mount Shasta to be higher into the image. I figured that would bring out more of a sense of grandeur with the setting.
