The Southern Pacific Railroad, as an independent company, no longer exists. It was acquired by the Union Pacific Corporation in 1996 and subsequently merged into the Union Pacific Railroad operations. The Shasta Route is served today by Amtrak’s “Coast Starlight.” The modern route remains highly regarded for its spectacular scenery, including views of the Cascade mountain range and Mount Shasta. It is fascinating to see that the route advertised in 1945 remains one of the most iconic and scenic rail corridors in the United States today.<br />

<p>I captured this while waking around the Bunny Flat Trailhead with a view looking to the northeast and taking in a setting with Mount Shasta as a backdrop. This is located in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The rest of the image composition was moving around and aligning myself with the small trees and bushes, as well as with the ridges and peaks of Mount Shasta. Just something pleasing to the eye with the layout to my front.<br />
<br />
The conversion of black and white was while doing post-production. I had walked around the Mount Shasta city area the evening after capturing this image and had noticed one photographer with a blown up image of Mount Shasta in black and white with clouds overhead. I decided to use the sky replacement tool in Photoshop and brought in an image of clouds that I had captured a few years back with my Nikon D850 SLR camera in west Texas. I then brought in a TIFF image to Silver Efex Pro 7 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.</p>

<p>As I was walking around the Old Ski Bowl Trailhead in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, I took in this view to the north and explored the open mountain landscape with large rocks and plant-life. An evergreen forest stretched off in the distance. Mount Shasta seemed to rise into the skies above. The blue skies contrasted with the earth-tones below.</p>

<p>At a roadside pullout along the Everitt Memorial Highway with a view looking to the northeast. This is in Shasta-Trinity National Forest with Mount Shasta as a distant backdrop. <br />

I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation in DxO PhotoLab 8. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 7 where I added a Polarization, Foliage, and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.</p>

<p>A setting while taking in views across grassy meadow with a backdrop of an evergreen forest and some nearby hillsides. This picturesque setting is looking to the southeast with majestic ridges and peaks of the Mount Shasta standing tall in the distance. With this image, I chose to zoom in with a focal length to have the nearby hillside in Mount Shasta fill the image from edge to edge with just a little bit of blue skies above to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.</p>

<p>A setting I took in as I walked around and explored the Lake Shastina area in northern California. The view is looking to the southeast across a grassy meadow with an evergreen forest and hillsides on the distant side. Mount Shasta is the amazing backdrop with its peaks and ridges seemingly rising into the skies above.</p>
