Rue de Maubeuge corner Rue du Faubourg Montmartre with Café M.

Rue de Maubeuge
Rue de Maubeuge is a 1.410 meter long street in the 9ème and 10ème arrondissement. It starts at Place Kossuth and ends at Boulevard de la Chapelle. It crosses the quartiers Faubourg Montmartre, Rochechouart and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul.
The street bears the name of the town of Maubeuge, which is served by the Gare du Nord that runs along it. Several odonyms in the vicinity of the station respond to this logic.

The Hôtel de Cluny was built in the late 15th century on the site of an older building constructed after the Abbey of Cluny acquired the ancient Roman baths in 1340.

The manor house was rebuilt under Jacques d’Amboise, Abbot Commander of Cluny (1485–1510). In the 18th century, the tower of the Hôtel de Cluny served as an observatory for the astronomers Joseph-Nicolas Delisle, Jérôme Lalande, and Charles Messier. During the French Revolution in 1789, the manor house was confiscated.

In 1832, the archaeologist and art collector Alexandre Du Sommerard acquired the Hôtel de Cluny and used it to display his extensive collection of medieval artifacts. After his death, the collection became the property of the French state. The building opened as a museum in 1843.

The museum underwent a complete renovation over three years and reopened in 2022.
Tapestries
of the Life of Saint Stephen

is a series of 12 tapestries depicts the life, martyrdom and posthumous miracles of Stephen / Etienne. It was commissioned by the bishop Jean III Baillet 1477-1513).

The templates for the wall-hanging are attributed to a Flemish born painter, Gaultier de Campes, who lived in Paris.

Architecture, furniture, characters dressed in the fashions of the time, animals and monsters all help to illustrate a tale in which the supernatural intervenes up to and including the final episode, when the deacon St Lawrence takes the place of Etienne’s body in his tomb.
