The card was posted in Pau using a 50c stamp on Wednesday the 12th. August 1936. It was sent to:<br /> <br /> Mrs. Emerson,<br /> 83, Purewell,<br /> Christchurch,<br /> Hants.,<br /> Angleterre.<br /> <br /> The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br /> <br /> &quot;Wednesday.<br /> We are having lovely<br /> weather. Yesterday we<br /> went up really high and<br /> saw some wonderful<br /> waterfalls.<br /> Today there is nothing<br /> much doing but tomorrow<br /> we're going into the<br /> mountains - it's not a bit<br /> dangerous - and then go<br /> mountaineering.<br /> I hope you and Daddy are<br /> alright - I've only had one<br /> letter from you.<br /> I have had to translate<br /> another lecture - not<br /> quite so learned this<br /> time, but quite bad <br /> enough. However everyone<br /> gave me pretty compliments<br /> about it.<br /> We hope to arrive home<br /> Monday night, probably<br /> about 10 to 11 at night.<br /> We are spending Sunday<br /> night in Paris.<br /> Love to you both from<br /> Flora.&quot;<br /> <br /> <u>USS Champlin</u><br /> <br /> So what else happened on the day that Flora posted the card?<br /> <br /> Well, on the 12th. August 1936, the decommissioned Wickes-class destroyer USS Champlin was sunk in the Pacific Ocean during experimental tests.<br /> <br /> More on USS Champlin below.<br /> <br /> <u>SS Rooiberg</u><br /> <br /> Also on that day, the UK whaler SS Rooiberg struck a rock in Saldanha Bay and sank. She was declared a total loss.<br /> <br /> Saldanha Bay, is a deep harbour of the Atlantic Ocean, situated on the southwest coast of South Africa.
