Traversed by the only two rivers of the biblical Paradise—whose significance and perils may have inspired the Flood myth—ancient Mesopotamia was also the land where irrigation was first invented and developed. These early human efforts to master water by artificially transforming the natural environment led to the creation of the first known hydraulic structures in Mesopotamia (including canals, bridges, aqueducts, piping networks, and artificial lakes). These developments brought about changes for the region and its inhabitants—changes whose long-term strengths and weaknesses the exhibition will examine. Drawing exclusively on the Louvre’s own collections—the richness of which makes such a project possible—the exhibition is integrated into the department’s permanent galleries, exploring its Near Eastern antiquities through the lens of water and the environmental lessons it offers, from the past to the present.
