The Pyramide du Louvre (Louvre Pyramid), the glass pyramid at the center of the Cour Napoléon, was designed by Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei and inaugurated in 1989 as part of the Grand Louvre project initiated under President François Mitterrand in 1981. Constructed from glass and metal, the pyramid rises 21.6 meters and consists of 673 glass panes. It serves as the museum’s main entrance, providing access to all three wings (Denon, Sully, Richelieu) via a large underground concourse. While initially controversial for introducing contemporary architecture into the historic palace courtyard, the Pei’s modernist intervention not only unified circulation across the museum’s expanding collections addressing long-standing congestion, but has become a landmark symbol of the Louvre’s global identity.

The Louvre is the world’s most visited museum and one of its largest, housing over 35,000 works of art from prehistory to the 19th century. Originally built as a fortress under Philippe Auguste in the late 12th century, it was transformed into a royal palace and later into a public museum during the French Revolution in 1793. Its collections span eight departments, including Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman art, Islamic art, sculpture, decorative arts, paintings, prints, and drawings. The museum is organized across three wings—Denon, Sully, and Richelieu—surrounding the Cour Napoléon. The modern glass Pyramid entrance, designed by architect I. M. Pei and inaugurated in 1989, unifies the historic palace complex while serving as a symbol of the museum’s global identity.

The Pavillon Sully, the central pavilion of the Louvre’s historic Cour Carrée, named after Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully (1560–1641), chief minister to King Henri IV, was originally begun in the early 17th century under architect Jacques Lemercier during the reign of Louis XIII architect. Its sculptural program, finalized in 1857 during the Second Empire under architect Hector Lefuel, includes Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre-Charles Simart's central high relief pediment, high-relief group Napoléon Ier dominant l’Histoire et les Arts (Napoleon I Dominating History and the Arts). Draped cariatides (caryatids) by Francisque Duret and Simart and Nanteuil's personification of L'Art and L'Encouragement line the upper level, while La Paix et la Guerre (Peace and War) by Pierre Jules Cavelier flank a central clock.

Marine marchande (Merchant Marine), sculpted by François Jouffroy in 1868, is located on the south façade of the Louvre at the Guichets Lesdiguières, between the Pavillon de Lesdiguières and Pavillon de Trémoille in the Denon Wing. Commissioned during the Second Empire expansion under architect Hector Lefuel, this monumental allegorical group celebrates French maritime commerce. Positioned on the Seine-facing side of the Louvre, Marine marchande forms part of a sculptural ensemble that glorifies industry, trade, and navigation as pillars of imperial strength.
