I've taken this shot numerous times and until this one I've never been happy with it. We took a circular hike from Alstonefield through Wolfscote Dale, this view is looking back from the fields near Alstonefield towards Wolfscote. Lucky with the weather here and the light and clouds add some atmosphere.

This morning I took a trip to Padley Gorge again where I avoided tripping over but did manage to upset the Ice Cream Van Man. (Again).

I arrived well before the Ice Cream Van Man did and I parked as close as possible to the gate to Padley. Every time I've done this I arrive back to my car to see an Ice Cream Van Man with a face like a wet weekend every time I steal "his" parking space!

This is a 7 x shot focus stack and I promise faithfully I shall return and bag the same parking space!

This is a little experiment I conducted this morning to see how far I could push a super wide panorama without messing it up. This is 19 x vertically oriented shots photomerged in Photoshop and cropped to a 65 x 24 ratio.

Compositionally, it may not be a world beater but I like the idea of the immersive view as if you're stood in the scene.

One thing is for sure, Flickr is the only place I know of that does justice to the size and scale of the image.

Stanage Edge

Stanage is the largest and most impressive of the gritstone edges

Situated on the moors north of Hathersage, and visible from miles away down in the Hope Valley, it stretches for a length of approximately 4miles from its northern tip at Stanage End to the southern point close to the Cowper Stone (near Burbage Rocks).

It is a famous location for rock-climbing and a popular spot for walkers.

Stanage’s situation is high, and it can be snowbound in winter.

For most of its length, it lies between the 1,300 and 1,500 ft contours. The rock face itself attains a maximum height of 85 ft, but for most of its length it is between 50 and 60 ft high.

The high point of the main edge is at High Neb (1,502 ft), which lies near the northern end.
Technical Note

There are two trig points on Stanage Edge. One is at the northern end at High Neb and one at the southern end.

If this image is viewed large, the trig point (white), which marks the southern end of the edge, is visible.

The rocks of the southern Pennines are Millstone Grit, quite a soft rock which is worn and scoured by the weather into these interesting shapes. This one sits on the edge of Kinder Scout standing sentinel over the Hope Valley below.

The soft Millstone Grit rocks are soft on the edge of the southern Pennines, and get weathered into some interesting shapes. This one looks like a mother duck leading her chicks, or maybe even a train. There are a large number of these rocks, collectively know as the Woolpacks.
