<p>Twisted pines stretch upward into a pale, diffused sky, their shapes softened by mist. The stillness is almost tangible—only the faintest movement of fog breaks the quiet.</p>

<p>Stripped of colour, the woodland becomes a study of contrast and form. Light filters through the fog, carving silhouettes from branches and stone.</p>

<p>A winding trail disappears into a blanket of mist, footprints fading into the unknown. Walking here feels like stepping between worlds, where direction is felt more than seen.</p>

<p>The path leads toward jagged rock formations barely visible through thick fog. The horizon disappears entirely, leaving only the feeling of standing at the edge of something vast.</p>

<p>Towering gritstone formations loom out of the haze, standing watch over the quiet woodland below. The Roaches feel ancient here—timeless and unmoving against the drifting fog.</p>

<p>Muted greens emerge through the fog as moss and grass breathe life into the rugged stone. Even in low light, the Roaches reveal quiet pockets of colour and calm.</p>

<p>A gentle glow pushes through the mist, illuminating the woodland in soft, golden tones. The Roaches briefly reveal warmth before the fog closes in again.</p>

<p>A steep, broken path climbs into the fog along the Roaches escarpment, where rock and silence swallow the horizon. The mist softens everything, leaving only texture and shape to guide the way.</p>

<p>The easternmost of the 24-meter (78 ft) diameter "bellmouth spillways"—locally known as "plugholes"—that act as overflow drains to prevent flooding, built in the 1940s.</p>

<p>Even getting back down became a struggle as the wind made it difficult to stay upright. Snow showers still blowing through above, and another one caught me as I followed the Pennine Way across to Upper Booth, which I sat out behind a wall as everything turned white again!</p>

<p>I spent a while sheltering behind a rock whilst the weather worsened. My plan was to continue west into the teeth of the storm, but even standing upright became difficult so I turned around and beat a cold retreat.</p>
