<p>As many of you who have seen some of my photos of the south Wales coast, you will know I repeatedly refer to the extreme tidal range along this coast line (yes, you recall it's the second highest in the world!).<br />
<br />
This photo illustrates the tidal effect. This is Penarth pier, near Cardiff. It is still some 15 minutes before the low tide point, but the end of the pier doesn't reach the sea! Yet at high tides, the sea can almost reach the promenade level and coastal cruise ships can comfortably tie up at the end for passenger access!</p>

<p>It's approaching high tide at Penarth, south Wales, and very little of the pebble beach can be seen. At low tide, only the very end of the pier remains in contact with the sea.<br />
The pier was built in 1894, both as a visitor attraction and as a landing stage for pleasure steamers. <br />
The art deco pavilion was added in 1930.<br />
Although there are no regular pleasure trips now, there are still summer visits from ships such as the Waverley, the last sea-going passenger paddle steamer in the world.</p>
