<p>On 9 September 1513, one of the bloodiest battles in Anglo-Scottish history was fought not at Flodden Hill, from which it takes its familiar name, but here at Branxton, Northumberland.<br />
<br />
This first interpretation board overlooks the western part of the battlefield, where the Scottish left flank, commanded by Lord Home and the Earl of Huntly having been pummeled by the lighter and more maneuverable light artillery of the English advanced downhill against the English right under Sir Edmund Howard.<br />
<br />
The Scottish attack was initially successful. Unlike the Scottish formations advancing nearer the centre, Home and Huntly's troops encountered comparatively favourable ground and drove the English back. Elsewhere, treacherous, boggy terrain disrupted the Scottish pike formations, leaving them vulnerable to English soldiers armed with shorter bills.<br />
<br />
The initial Scottish success proved fleeting. English reserves under Lord Dacre intervened, while the Scottish left failed to exploit its advantage or relieve the increasingly desperate fighting in the centre.<br />
<br />
By the end of the day, King James IV lay dead alongside much of Scotland's nobility. His death made him the last reigning British monarch to be killed in battle.<br />
<br />
More than 500 years later, the rolling Northumberland countryside gives little indication of the slaughter that once took place here. Yet the contours of the landscape still help explain why the battle unfolded as it did.<br />
