In April 2019, Borders Buses took into the fleet three Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 vehicles equipped to carry 2 bikes (later increased to 4 bikes). The buses, which operate on the X62 service linking Edinburgh, Peebles and Melrose, serve an area popular with cyclists. Here, 11903, en route from Edinburgh to Melrose is seen turning from Eastgate into Northgate in Peebles town centre. The High Street is on the left and the former Veitch’s building on the corner of High Street and Northgate is visible behind the bus. The outfitters business traced its history back to 1884 but closed here approx 2007/8. The two lovely nameplates high on the attractive building - one on each street frontage - survive. Borders Buses took over this bus route and others from First in March 2017.

calderwoodroy posted a photo:

Lattice footbridge in grounds of Peebles Hydro which crossed the former North British Railway from Peebles to Galashiels. The railway opened in 1864 and closed in 1962. The former cutting here has been infilled but the bridge has been retained. The view is looking westwards towards Peebles. The bridge allowed pedestrians access from Innerleithen Road through formal gardens and across the railway to bowling greens and then up a flight of steps to the Hydro itself. The Hydro opened in 1881 (so after the railway) but was burnt out in July 1905. The present building - designed by James Miller - was completed by 1907. It was never railway owned. The hotel appears to have reclaimed the former railway land, whereas the one time gardens off to the left have been disposed of for new housing.
Peebles and its railways can be seen on this 1908 map.

This accommodation or occupation bridge in Peebles crossed the ex-NOrth British Railway from Peebles to Galashiels. The road underneath is called The Bridges (giving access to a small housing development, behind the photographer) and is built on the solum of the railway, which opened 1864 and closed in 1962. The road over the bridge gave access to a house on the slope above. The view looks westwards towards Edinburgh Road, the southernmost part of which is built over the site of the 2nd NBR station.

calderwoodroy posted a photo:

Some of the main roads in Peebles have these attractive street signs with the name in white on this red background. The coat of arms is that of the Royal Burgh of Peebles and District Community Council and the fish are salmon. Ironically, this part of Edinburgh Road was built in the late 1970s on the solum of the former North British Railway through the 1864 station.

calderwoodroy posted a photo:

The picture captures Borders Buses 11801 on Eastgate at the main bus stop in Peebles, outside the town’s Post Office. Operating Service X62 to Edinburgh, the vehicle is picking up passengers after arriving from Melrose via Borders General Hospital, Galashiels and Innerleithen etc. The vehicle - an Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 MMC - was a former Alexander Dennis demonstrator seeing service with Reading Buses and other operators before arriving at Borders Buses in Spring 2018, where it was later taken into the fleet. The Enviro 400 was originally launched in 2005 and over 10,000 have been sold and is believed to have been the UK’s best selling bus for more than a decade. The bus is seen in the attractive red, blue and cream livery now used across all fleets in the Craig of Campbeltown group. This bus route is Peebles’ only public transport link with Edinburgh, train services having been withdrawn as long ago as 1962.

g0cqk posted a photo:
