St Mary's Abbey, Melrose was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, who had come from Clairvaux Abbey (France),
at the request of King David I of Scotland.
The Commendator's House was build en 1500,
Commendators were lay administrators who, during the 1500s, increasingly supplanted abbots as the men in charge of abbeys.
Their arrival was one of many indicators of the moral decline of abbeys across Scotland, itself a symptom of the wider malaise in the church that helped prompt the Scottish Reformation of 1560

Taken a couple of years ago, at Traquair House, in the Scottish Borders. I was captivated by this lady, who kindly posed for a few snaps. She was part of a musical trio, playing medieval music on trad instruments.

ZM719, Boeing AH-64E Apache (CN UD020) 'Nemesis 1' of 662 Squadron, Army Air Corps passes Cardrona village en route from Otterburn Camp to Balado Airfield for a fuel stop (and if they're smart; a couple of the cafe's excelled sausage rolls for lunch). One of four Apaches that made the trip both Saturday and Sunday. Sadly this pass was the highest (probably due to the wind), the others being at ultra low level. One day I'll get enough notice to bag a look down shot, but ADSB is very patchy in the valleys.
