The garden was opened to the public beginning in 1976. In 2010, the house underwent significant renovation and internal modernisation in order to be let for holiday rentals. The property was sold in 2018 and is now privately owned. The gardens and Stables Tearooms are no longer open to the public. I knew what they were thinking. The rain cloud had disappeared from the coin, awaiting the next toss. <br /> <br /> 'No,' I flicked my ears in a firm message. 'I'm not doing that.'<br /> <br /> 'Go on,' said Cashew. 'What's the worse that can happen? We only got drenched in a sudden downpour. The woodland needed the rain.' He sniffed the air. 'And you do like fresh rain smell. So what's the problem?'<br /> <br /> 'You want me to flip the coin to see if we can be dry,' I said. 'What if it comes up the other side?'<br /> <br /> 'We can't possibly get wetter than this,' Cashew laughed. 'Well, maybe if the wolves were here to shake themselves dry.'<br /> <br /> 'Don't tempt fate, Cashew,' Pistachio warned. He fixed his amber fox eyes on me. 'Though he does have a point.'<br /> <br /> 'What's the probability of us getting a blow dry from a hot gust of wind?' Brie pondered.<br /> <br /> 'Very low. Almost impossible,' I sighed.<br /> <br /> 'Almost possible, but not completely impossible. You can bring a hot wind from the desert,' said Cashew. 'It'll be another experiment.'<br /> <br /> I worried a whole universe of things could go wrong, but I did not want to walk around the forest dripping wet. <br /> <br /> 'I would like us to have a natural blow dry from a warm wind. Just enough to shine our fur and make it feel snuggly,' I said. Pistachio raised his brows. 'Oh, and our blow dry is just that. A simple blow dry. We don't want to end up looking like fluff-balls with our fur standing on end.'<br /> <br /> I flipped the coin. 'Heads!' I said. <br /> <br /> The coin spun up and then down before settling on my paw. Everyone breathed out in relief when the coin landed heads. <br /> <br /> Suddenly I heard a whirring, whining noise, followed by a hot wind. It really was like a giant hairdryer. Warm air swept through the tunnel of trees, down the fern path and on towards the Great Pine. I felt the warmth dry my fur from root to tip until it sparkled.<br /> <br /> Just as suddenly the wind stopped. I felt warm, dry and fuzzy all over. All our fur was so snug and soft I wished it could stay like this forever. I glanced at the coin. What was the probability our fur can remain like this all the time?<br /> <br /> 'Maybe we can have waterproof fur. Like, fur that never gets wet even in the heaviest rain,' I said.<br /> <br /> I walked down the path towards the Great Pine, my paw clenched tightly around the coin. I shook the idea out of my head. No, it was silly. All I want is a quiet walk in the woods. <br /> <br /> Labneh and Brie tempted me into foraging blackberries. They stuck their paws in, hoping for a big juicy one. Sometimes they found lovely juicy sweet blackberries that burst on the tongue, and other times they found dried, shriveled blackberries full of grit. But soon their mouths were purple with juice.<br /> <br /> 'See, you didn't need a coin for that,' I said. <br /> <br /> 'It's really hot here,' said Cashew, fanning himself with his front paws. 'Falafel . . . could you?'<br /> <br /> 'No,' I said, sharply. <br /> <br /> 'Oh go on. What's the probability of snow or frost in summer?' Cashew insisted.<br /> <br /> 'Remember what happened with Maisie's socks? No!' I said. <br /> <br /> 'Then let's ask for something else,' said Cumin. 'Maybe we can be trillionaires.'<br /> <br /> 'Yeah, like win a lottery or something,' Acorn said.<br /> <br /> 'It'll still be fifty-fifty,' Labneh pointed out. <br /> <br /> 'So, if it comes up tails when we ask for heads, we can always throw again,' Cashew glanced up at the Great Pine tree. 'What is the opposite of a trillionaire?'<br /> <br /> I sighed, walking faster to get away from their questions. 'It doesn't matter. I just want a quiet walk in the woods. Trillionaire or not,' I said.<br /> <br /> 'Fine,' Cashew huffed. <br /> <br /> That seemed to be the end of it. I continued on, passing John's wort and the withered remains of rosebay willowherb flowers. A dried foxglove stem bent sorrowfully on the ground. The others gathered and bent their heads in mourning.<br /> <br /> 'Poor foxgloves,' Cumin whispered. She tugged my paw. 'Falafel, can we have snow and frost? Just a little bit.'<br /> <br /> 'I'd love to see what snow looks like in summer,' said Brie.<br /> <br /> 'So would I, but it's too dangerous,' said Labneh. 'Imagine how the plants are going to react. And the squirrels and robins and jackdaws.'<br /> <br /> 'And us. None of us like the cold,' said Pistachio.<br /> <br /> 'We could ask for frost and snow in a tiny little area, like here. Imagine skating up and down this path. We can race. Last one's a snowy seagull,' said Cashew. 'Oh go on Falafel. Throw the coin.'<br /> <br /> I sensed the coin buzzing in my paw, desperate for another throw. I refused to give in. I was not going to toss the coin for snow. No way. Not ever. <br /> <br /> Then Cumin stumbled. Pistachio rushed forward to grab her. Immediately I felt the bump of them falling into me and the coin slipped from my paw. It spun slowly up in the air singing like a wineglass.<br /> <br /> 'No!' I shrieked. <br /> <br /> 'Heads!' Cashew said.<br /> <br /> I couldn't stop the word rolling off my tongue too. The coin floated towards me and landed on my paw. <br /> <br /> 'It is heads,' I mumbled. <br /> <br /> A little snowflake appeared over the head. I tried to throw the coin again, but my paw was stuck. I heard a crackling, groaning sound, and shivered in a wave of cold air. The ground under my paws felt slippery. Ice crept along the path and up the trunk of the Great Pine. Leaves and blackberries glittered frozen. Tiny icicles hung from pine needles.<br /> <br /> 'So this is what frost and snow in summer looks like,' said Cashew. <br /> <br /> 'It's pretty,' said Cumin, shivering in the cold.<br /> <br /> 'I prefer the warmth,' said Amber.<br /> <br /> I agreed. The air was too cold. Our breath froze into snowy white clouds. The frost spread out beyond the path, carpeting the woods, and encased everything it touched in sparkling crystals. Then I saw little ice mushrooms appear. They swelled as they grew, thicker and higher, until they towered over our heads like tree trunks. Marching on and on over the hills.<br /> <br /> 'A forest of stalagmites,' Pistachio said. 'Falafel. Stop this. It's too much.'<br /> <br /> 'How?' I cried. <br /> <br /> 'Just toss the coin like before and ask for something. Anything. Make it rain hot dogs for all I care. Just do it!' Pistachio snapped.<br /> <br /> I had never heard Pistachio shout like that. It scared me. With trembling cold hands I tossed the coin and ask for hot dogs. It seemed such a silly thing to ask. How could it possibly rain hot dogs from the sky? <br /> <br /> 'Tails,' I said, as I felt sure that was the most likely.<br /> <br /> The relentless march of the stalagmites paused. The coin settled on my paw and landed tails. Straight away a hot dog appeared in place of the snowflake. The stalagmites began to melt. The woods looked like summer again.<br /> <br /> 'So how does it rain hot dogs?' I pondered.<br /> <br /> 'Falafel, you didn't?' Cashew said, trying to hold back his laugh. 'You were meant to just ask for hot dogs. Pistachio wasn't serious about the rain part. You could have just asked for a delivery or a food truck.'<br /> <br /> 'Oh,' I felt my cheeks blushing. <br /> <br /> 'Falafel, when you asked for hot dogs. You did mean those sausages right? Not an actual dog that's hot,' Brie whispered. <br /> <br /> 'I hope they're vegan hot dogs,' said Labneh, licking her fennec fox lips. 'I'm hungry.'<br /> <br /> 'So, how does it rain hot dogs again?' I said with a whisker twitch.<br /> <br /> 'Look!' said Cumin, pointing up.<br /> <br /> A huge cargo plane roared across the sky. Little dots and boxes fell out the open back, clustered around a white parachute. They looked like a swarm of bees plummeting towards the woods. <br /> <br /> The little dots took shape, the swarm growing larger and closer. Thousands of hot dogs in baguettes suddenly rained down, bouncing off the path, splattering mustard and ketchup everywhere. <br /> <br /> 'Heads up! Watch out!' called a voice over our heads.<br /> <br /> A parachuting royal corgi touched down on the path next to the Great Pine. He unbuckled his parachute and came lolloping this way, hot dogs falling around him. Sweltering in the summer heat.<br /> <br /> 'Looks like you chaps and chapettes are in a spot of bother,' the corgi said with a salute. 'The name's Monty. Agent Monty of MI6. At your service.'<br /> <br /> Hot dogs and a hot – dog.
