Tot i la seva accidentada historia, en especial al s. XX, Varsòvia conserva bona part de les seves muralles medievals, molt més que, per exemple Cracovia, que en tenia molt més longitud i quedà intacte durant les guerres. Per descomptat ha estat reconstruida, com la resta de la ciutat, de fet. I aquest és el sector nord, el més ben conservat, amb la barbacana al fons.<br />

Alguns dels combats més forts de l'aixecament de Varsòvia el 1944 contra els nazis foren al barri vell i els seus accessos per el sud. A les antigues muralles medievals de la ciutat s'hi troba, des del 1983, una petita però icònica estatua, el Mały Powstaniec ("petit insurgent"), que recorda als adolescents que lluitaren amb l'Armia Krajowa (exercit del interior) durant l'aixecament. Fou disenyada el 1946 per Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz. A nivell personal diré que aquesta estatua infantil, per tot el seu context li dona mil voltes al molt més famós Manneken Pis de Brusel·les.<br />

Some of the fiercest fighting of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis took place in the Old Town and its southern approaches. On the old medieval city walls, stands a small but iconic statue, the Mały Powstaniec ("Little Insurgent"), since 1983, commemorating the teenagers who fought with the Armia Krajowa (Home Army) during the uprising. It was designed in 1946 by Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz. Personally, I would say that this children's statue, in all its context, gives a thousand thumbs up to the much more famous Manneken Pis in Brussels.<br />

A pràcticament cada edifici del centre de Varsòvia trobes una tragedia rera una altre. Aquest aparentment anodí palau barroc, el Pałac Raczyńskich fou fins la II Guerra Mundial la seu del ministeri de justicia. Els nazis el feren una seu de represió on es condemnava a mort als resistents. El gener de 1944 s'hi afusellaren 50 presoners. Durant l'aixecament del agost del 44, fou convertit en hospital pels polonesos. <br />
<br />
El 13 d'agost, un vehicle de demolicions alemany Bogward IV capturat pels polonesos pensant-se que era un blindat normal, detònà just a la cantonada volant mig edifici i matant unes 300 persones que s'havien aplegat entorn el vehicle. Encara més endavant, en la part que quedava d'edifici continuant com a hospital s'hi aplegaren uns 400 ferits. El 2 de setembre fou capturat per les SS, que executaren amb metralletes i granades a quasi tots els pacients i personal medic. Després incendiaren l'edifici.<br />

In almost every building in the center of Warsaw you will find one tragedy after another. This apparently nondescript baroque palace, the Pałac Raczyńskich, was the seat of the Ministry of Justice until World War II. The Nazis turned it into a place of repression where resistance fighters were sentenced to death. In January 1944, 50 prisoners were shot there. During the August 1944 uprising, it was converted into a hospital by the Poles. <br />
<br />
On August 13, a German Bogward IV demolition vehicle captured by the Poles, thinking it was a normal armored vehicle, detonated right on the corner, blowing up half the building and killing about 300 people who had gathered around the vehicle. Even later, in the remaining part of the building, which continued as a hospital, about 400 wounded people gathered there. On September 2, it was captured by the SS, who executed almost all the patients and medical staff with machine guns and grenades. And then set the ruins on fire.<br />

En aquesta urna a la nau central de la basílica de la Santa Creu de Varsòvia hi ha dipositat el cor de Frederic Chopin. Es curiós perque just setmanes abans jo havia estat a la seva cel·la a la cartoixa de Valldemossa, a Mallorca i ara tenia davant meu el seu cor.<br />
<br />
La basílica de la Santa Creu (Bazylika Świętego Krzyża) és una de les més importants de Varsòvia, molt rellevant nacionalment, situada al centre de la ciutat (Śródmieście). Durant l'aixecament de Varsòvia del 1 d'agost de 1944, inicialment va quedar en mans alemanes, juntament amb la comisaria de policia just al sud. Els polonesos de la Armia Krajowa (exèrcit del interior) varen atacar aquestes posicions repetidament fins que ocuparen la basílica i la comisaria el 23 d'agost. Però els contra-atacs alemanys foren brutals, emprant fins i tot els primers drons terrestres, els Goliath, que volaren un campanar i la volta de la nau. Finalment, els polonesos optaren per retirar-se de les ruines el 6 de setembre.<br />
<br />
L'església fou reconstruida al llarg de les dècades de la postguerra, així com la iconica estatua de Crist amb la creu davant la porta principal (amb el text Sursum corda).<br />

In this urn in the central nave of the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Warsaw is deposited the heart of Frederic Chopin. It is curious because just weeks earlier I had been in his cell at the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa, in Mallorca, and now I had his heart in front of me.<br />

The Basilica of the Holy Cross (Bazylika Świętego Krzyża) is one of the most important in Warsaw, of great national significance, located in the city center (Śródmieście). During the Warsaw Uprising of 1 August 1944, it initially stayed in German hands, along with the police station just to the south. The Poles of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army) repeatedly attacked these positions (from the left) until they occupied the basilica and the police station on 23 August. But the German counterattacks were brutal, even using the first ground drones, the Goliaths, which blew up a bell tower and the nave vault, along with the iconic Christ with the Cross in the main entrance. Finally, the Poles chose to withdraw from the ruins on 6 September.<br />
<br />
The church was slowly but fully rebuilt in the decades after the war, and the statue of Christ put back in it's place under the text "Sursum corda".<br />

Al centre de Varsòvia hi havia la Plac Napoleona (Plaça Napoleó) amb un efímer monument al emperador francès del 1921, que es va retirar poc després per motius poc clars. Després de ser arrasada per l'aixecament del 1944, la plaça canvià de nom a Plaça dels Insurgents de Varsòvia (Plac Powstańców Warszawy), i no fou fins el 2011 en que un nou monument al famós cors s'hi aixècà, que és aquest.<br />
<br />
Lògicament tot plegat ve donat per la política pro-polonesà que seguí Napoleó durant molts anys, sobretot pel seu interès de debiltar tant Prussia com Russia, enemics seus. Milers de polonesos lluitaren al exèrcit napoleonic.<br />
<br />
Aquesta foto forma part de tot un viatge pel centre de Polònia, enfocat especialment en els més tragics moments del Holocaust i la II Guerra Mundial, que esclafà Polonia com pocs llocs, però que alhora contrasta amb l'increible renaixement del país fins al moment actual.<br />

In the center of Warsaw there was the Plac Napoleona (Napoleon Square) with an ephemeral monument to the French emperor from 1921, which was removed shortly after for unclear reasons. After being razed to the ground by the 1944 uprising, the square was renamed Warsaw Insurgents' Square (Plac Powstańców Warszawy), and it was not until 2011 that a new monument to the famous Corsican was erected there, which is this one.<br />
<br />
Logically, all this is due to the pro-Polish policy that Napoleon followed for many years, especially because of his interest in weakening both Prussia and Russia, his enemies. Thousands of Poles fought in the Napoleonic army.<br />
