Un tanc pesat sovietic IS-2, la resposta als Tigers i Königtigers alemanys a finals de la II Guerra Mundial. Aquest el vaig veure al Museu de la Tecnología Militar Polonesa (Muzeum Polskiej Techniki Wojskowej), al Fort IX, al sud de Varsòvia. Tot i que de fet és tecnologia militar plenament soviètica.<br />

Aquesta foto forma part de tot un viatge pel centre de Polònia, enfocat especialment en els més tragics moments del Holocaust i la II Guerra Mundial, que esclafà Polonia com pocs llocs, però que alhora contrasta amb l'increible renaixement del país fins al moment actual.<br />

Al est de Varsòvia, en els boscos propers al Vístula hi ha un lloc molt simbolic del renaixement polonès després del intent d'extermini nazi. Sembla un turó ple d'arbres, però és completament artificial. Està format per mil·lions de metres cubics de runa, amb una alçada total de 35 metres, acumulada aquí a la postguerra, per netejar tota la destrucció nazi de la ciutat. I no és pas l'unic, n'hi ha 2 més (i encara un 3er, desaparescut) als barris de Ochota i Wola. El de Ochota és tant alt que es fa servir de pista d'esquí i es el punt més alt de la ciutat.<br />
<br />
Aquest turó senzillament s'anomenava "l'abocador" (zwałka) fins que fou adecentat en parc de la memoria de la destrucció de Varsòvia el 1994, El 2023 es va arranjar més, amb una exposició permanent molt interessant, mostrant com es va netejar i reconstruir Varsòvia de la quasi eliminació del 1944. Ara s'anomena Kopiec Powstania Warszawskiego ("Parc del Aixecament de Varsòvia") i cada any una flama crema al cim des del 1 d'agost i durant 63 dies.<br />

East of Warsaw, in the forests near the Vistula River, there is a very symbolic place of the Polish rebirth after the Nazi extermination attempt. It looks like a hill full of trees, but it is completely artificial. It is made up of millions of cubic meters of rubble, with a total height of 35 meters, accumulated here in the post-war period, to clean up all the Nazi destruction of the city. And it is not the only one, there are 2 more (and a 3rd one, which has disappeared) in the Ochota and Wola neighborhoods. The one in Ochota is so high that it is used as a ski slope and is the highest point in the city.<br />
<br />
This hill was simply called "the dump" (zwałka) until it was cleaned up into a park of memory of the destruction of Warsaw in 1994. In 2023 it was further improved, with a very interesting permanent exhibition, showing how Warsaw was cleared and rebuilt from the near-annihilation of 1944. It is now called Kopiec Powstania Warszawskiego ("Warsaw Uprising Park") and every year a flame burns on the top from August 1st for 63 days.<br />

Durant l'aixecament de Varsòvia, d'agost a octubre de 1944, els polonesos del Armia Krajowa (Exèrcit del Interior) aconseguiren controlar bona part del centre de la ciutat (Śródmieście), però aquest estava (i està) tallat per la gran Avinguda Jerusalem (Aleje Jerozolimskie). És molt ample i completament recta, i els alemanys controlaven forts edificis a banda i banda, com la estació central i el Museu Nacional. Ningú podia creuar sense ser ametrallat. <br />
<br />
Per tant, els polonesos excavaren una barricada, amb talussos de runa, llambordes i mobles a les dues bandes, per poder comunicar els seus dos sectors del centre de la ciutat. During the Warsaw Uprising, from August to October 1944, the Poles of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army) managed to control a large part of the city center (Śródmieście), but it was (and is) cut off by the great Jerusalem Avenue (Aleje Jerozolimskie). It is very wide and completely straight, and the Germans controlled strong buildings on both sides, such as the central station and the National Museum. No one could cross without being machine-gunned. <br />
<br />
Therefore, the Poles dug a barricade, with embankments of rubble, paving stones and furniture on both sides, to be able to communicate their two sectors of the city center. Despite being bombed and machine-gunned daily, this barricade maintained vital communication until the end of the uprising. This plaque remembers this, although all the buildings around it are completely new.<br />

<p>Afternoon in Warsaw and I am heading to the bakery for a snack. I was walking down the shadowed side of the street when I passed a large window reflecting the street opposite. I noticed the warm light on the building and wanted to capture it, when I raised the camera I also noticed that I was becoming part of the scene but in shadow. <br />

Al mig de la zona controlada pels polonesos des del 1 d'agost de 1944, durant el famós aixecament de Varsòvia, es trobaba el gratacels de la companyia telefònica PASTa. Era un punt estrategic imporant tant per les comunicacions que controlava com per la seva alçada (fou el primer gratacels de Varsòvia i aleshores seguia sent el 2on edifici més alt de la ciutat). Uns 200 alemanys s'hi havien atrinxerat i per derrotar-los fou necessari incendiar els soterranis amb benzina i llençaflames, el 20 d'agost. Es va combatre escales amunt, pis per pis fins que els alemanys es rendiren el dia 22. L'edifici, molt danyat, va sobreviure a la guerra i fou reconstruit posteriorment en un estil menys medieval que l'original. Als baixos i ha una magnífica llibreria d'historia militar.<br />

In the middle of the area controlled by the Poles from August 1, 1944, during the famous Warsaw Uprising, was the PASTa telephone company skyscraper. It was an important strategic point both for the communications it controlled and for its height (it was the first skyscraper in Warsaw and at that time it was still the 2nd tallest building in the city). About 200 Germans had entrenched themselves there and to defeat them it was necessary to set fire to the basements with gasoline and flamethrowers on August 20. The fight took place up stairs, floor by floor until the Germans surrendered on the 22nd. The building, badly damaged, survived the war and was later rebuilt in a less medieval style than the original. On the ground floor there is a magnificent military history library.<br />

Aquesta és una foto d'un element del regim comunista feta amb una càmera sovietica, expropietat d'un oficial del exèrcit sovietic i pel·licula i revelador del bloc comunista (o els seus equivalents actuals).<br />

Aquesta és la torre del iconic Palau de la Cultura i la Ciència (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Varsòvia. Soc conscient de la relació de amor-odi (o directament odi) de molts polonesos envers aquest bloc sovietic al centre de la ciutat. Es tot un símbol de la ciutat i del règim comunista, alhora. Però aquí està, i ara potser ja no el miren amb tant odi com fins 1989, i menys quan veieu tot el rerafons de gratacels molt mes alts i estilitzats de la pròspera Varsòvia democràtica.<br />

This is a communist era item photographed with a communist camera owned by a soviet army officer and with communist era film and developer, or at least it's modern equivalents.<br />
<br />
This is the tower of the iconic Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), in Warsaw. I am aware of the love-hate relationship (or outright hatred) that many Poles have towards this Soviet-bloc building in the city centre. It is a symbol of the city and the communist regime, at the same time. But here it is, and now it may not be looked at with as much hatred as it was before 1989, especially when you see the much taller and more stylized skyscrapers of the prosperous democratic Warsaw in the background.<br />

A Varsòvia hi ha un museum ferroviari molt interessant, el Stacja Muzeum. Jo no soc especialment coneixedor de les màquines de vapor, però la colecció que tenen és inmensa. De fet, hi vaig anar per dos o tres locomotores en concret, vinculades a la II Guerra Mundial. <br />
<br />
Abans de la guerra, a Alemania es varen fabricar unes poques locomotores amb carenats aerodinamics per provar de incrementar la velocitat. Aquest és un model de la classe 03.10, fabricada el 1939. Després de la guerra, 9 d'elles varen passar a mans poloneses, com aquesta, anomenada Pm3-5.<br />

In Warsaw there is a very interesting railway museum, the Stacja Muzeum. I am not particularly knowledgeable about steam engines, but the collection they have is immense. In fact, I went there for two or three locomotives in particular, linked to World War II. <br />
<br />
Before the war, a few locomotives with aerodynamic fairings were manufactured in Germany to try to increase speed. This is a model of the class 03.10, manufactured in 1939. After the war, 9 of them passed into Polish hands, like this one, called Pm3-5.<br />

Una de les peces icòniques del museu és aquest tren blindat, un dels pocs supervivents a nivell mundial (només hi ha més cosa a Eslovaquia i Finlandia). Està format per dues parts, una locomotora diesel cuirassada i un vagó d'artilleria, de procedencia diversa. El vagó d'artilleria, es d'origen sovietic, capturat i adaptat pels alemanys fins tornar a ser capturat pels sovietics el 1944. La locomotora és diesel (en primer pla) i molt blindada (diuen que és el vehicle autopropulsat més pesat mai emprat per la Wehrmacht, amb 200 tones) i armada amb 2 torres d'artilleria. De fet és una peça única, ja que no s'en feren més.<br />

El seu nom es Panzertriebwagen 16, i fou fabricat per Berliner Maschinenbau A.G. el 1942. Es va emprar sobretot per protegir les vies ferries del sud de Polònia fins que fou capturada el 1945 i incorporada al exèrcit polonès fins els anys 60.<br />

In Warsaw there is a very interesting railway museum, the Stacja Muzeum. I am not particularly knowledgeable about steam engines, but the collection they have is immense. In fact, I went there for two or three locomotives in particular, linked to World War II. <br />
<br />
Armoured train, in German, is panzerzug.<br />
<br />
One of the iconic pieces of the museum is this armored train, one of the few survivors worldwide (there are only more in Slovakia and Finland). It is made up of two parts, an armored diesel locomotive and an artillery wagon, of different origins. The artillery wagon, here in the background, is of Soviet origin, captured and adapted by the Germans until being captured again by the Soviets in 1944. The locomotive is diesel, heavily armored (they say it is the heaviest self-propelled vehicle ever used by the Wehrmacht, with 200 tons) and armed with 2 artillery turrets (76mm Soviet guns). In fact, it is a unique piece, since no more were made.<br />
<br />
Its name is Panzertriebwagen 16, and it was manufactured by Berliner Maschinenbau A.G. in 1942. It was mainly used to protect the railways of southern Poland until it was captured in 1945 and incorporated into the Polish army until the 1960s.<br />
