We arrived at Wroxeter at sunset or about 3:45pm. Since the site closes at 4, we had to make a very quick tour of the grounds as darkness approached.

It was on the route of Watling Street which ran from London northwards to Chester. Around 90ad a town was founded which became the 4th largest city in Roman Britain. It included all the facilities that were expected in a Roman city including Forum, Baths, Temples, a large Bascilica or gymnasium and market hall, a Main Street and shops. In its final stages it covered a large area and in addition to the communal buildings there were some 240 stone built houses. All 192 acres qwere surrounded by defensive ditches. The city was largely abandoned in the early 5th century after Roman Empire had collapsed and Britain had been left. Some occupancy of the site continued for a time but the buildings gradually collapsed or were demolished and removed to provide building materials locally including at St Andrews Church built in the 10th century. Only a very small part of the remains of the City, including the Basilica and the Baths complex, can be seen above ground now. Much of the City remains below the ground although an amphitheater can be traced nearby.
