<p>La décoration intérieure de l'Opéra d'État hongrois a été confiée aux peintres les plus prestigieux de la Hongrie du XIXe siècle. Trois artistes majeurs se partagent les fresques des plafonds et des espaces principaux<br />
- Károly Lotz (1833–1904) : C'est le peintre le plus emblématique du bâtiment. Il a réalisé la fresque monumentale de la coupole centrale de la salle de spectacle, intitulée « L'Apothéose de la Musique », représentant Apollon et les divinités de l'Olympe. Ses œuvres ornent également plusieurs plafonds à caissons dans les salons.<br />
- Bertalan Székely (1835–1910) : Ce grand maître de la peinture d'histoire a principalement décoré le plafond voûté du grand foyer. Ses fresques y dépeignent les neuf Muses de la mythologie grecque.<br />
- Mór Than (1828–1899) : Il a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec Székely pour orner le foyer et les espaces de circulation, illustrant la naissance et l'évolution de la musique et de la danse à travers des scènes mythologiques.<br />
- L'œuvre centrale : Réalisée par le célèbre peintre austro-hongrois Mór Than à l'ouverture du bâtiment en 1884, cette scène illustre l'intégration de la mythologie classique au sein de l'architecture théâtrale européenne. On y observe Bacchus sur son char, escorté par des satyres, des nymphes, des ménades et des bêtes sauvages (lions ou tigres) dans une atmosphère de célébration antique.<br />
<br />
- D'autres espaces, comme les salons de réception intimes ou les bars, accueillent des toiles d'autres artistes de l'époque, notamment Árpád Feszty qui a décoré la salle de réception.<br />

La fresque rectangulaire centrale représente le triomphe ou cortège de Bacchus (le dieu du vin et des festivités) accompagnant l'arrivée de la nuit. Elle est entourée de petites compositions illustrant diverses figures de la mythologie grecque.<br />
- Le décor environnant : Les peintures qui l'encadrent font écho aux œuvres du peintre Bertalan Székely qui ornent également le hall et représentent les muses grecques.<br />
- Le luminaire : À gauche de la photo, on distingue l'un des majestueux lustres en bronze et structures dorées qui éclairent les voûtes de ce salon.<br />
L'ensemble de ce plafond richement orné de feuilles d'or servait de décor théâtral social, où l'élite de Budapest venait se montrer lors des entractes.</p>
