The Millenniumi emlékmű (Millennium Monument), located in Budapest’s Hősök tere, commemorates the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest. Designed by Schickedanz Albert with sculptures primarily by Zala György, construction spanned 1896 to 1906, though the final statues were only completed in 1926.

The eclectic structure features a 36-meter central column topped by Gábriel arkangyal (Archangel Gabriel) holding the Holy Crown and apostolic double cross (removed for restoration in 2024), flanked at the base by the Hét Vezér or Hétmagyar (Seven chieftains of the Magyars). In the front is Árpád, considered to be the founder of the Hungarian nation. Behind him are the chieftains Előd, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba, and Töhötöm (Tétény).

Two semi-circular colonnades each house seven statues of iconic figures from Hungarian history, ranging from Stephen I to Lajos Kossuth. Under Communist rule, authorities removed five Habsburg statues from the Millenniumi emlékmű and replaced them Kuruc revoluntionaries, recasting the monument as a symbol of Hungarian independence. The structures are topped with allegorical sculptures representing Labour and Wealth, War, Peace, and Knowledge and Glory.

The Hősök emlékköve (Memorial Stone of Heroes) was added to the national monument in 1929, honoring all Hungarian soldiers who fell in battle during Hungary's 1000 year history, specifically in World War I, rather than representing a single unknown soldier.

The breathtaking St Matthias Church with its ornate roof tiles sits fittingly within the castle and fishermans bastion area of Budapest. It is stunning both inside and out and the accoustics make this an impressive place to listen to some classical music performed by talented musicians

A superb gathering of M62 locomotives lined up at Budapest Museum Depot to celebrate 60 years of the iconic Soviet-built diesel class.

Constructed by Luhanskteplovoz in Ukraine from the 1960s onwards, the M62 became a common sight across the Eastern Bloc, working freight and passenger duties in countries including Hungary, Poland, East Germany and the former Soviet Union. Nicknamed “Sergei” by railway enthusiasts, the class remains one of the most charismatic diesel locomotives ever built.

A fitting tribute to a true railway icon and a major piece of Eastern European railway history.
