<p>I loved the minimalism of Christmas decoration in this photo captured on a walk around one of Newcastle's council estates. Bonus points go to the owner for the ordered way the recycling is set out, and I couldn't help but smile at the chair and paint tin combo.</p>

<p>Handheld at 0.4 sec! This is, of course, a testament to my steady hands and not the insanely good stabilisation of modern mirrorless lenses!<br />

It's not often we get skies as clear as this. I was on my way home from a photoshoot in magical midwinter light - just from a village a couple of miles away where I'm also the rector - and some bare trees on Whistley Lane caught my eye, silhouetted against a <br />
bright orange horizon. I took this "less interesting" shot as an afterthought, thinking nothing useable would come of it - couldn't even be bothered breaking out the tripod in that cold air - but instead got a wonderful exposition of post-sunset glow on the tree and pinks and purples in the sky.</p>

<p>Commentary.<br />
<br />
Volunteers worked very hard to re-instate this Severn Valley Railway as a privately run, Heritage Line, in the 1970’s,<br />
following the notorious “Beeching” cuts of the early 1960’s.<br />
The line consists of a 16 mile stretch from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster with four stations and two request “halts.”<br />
Arley, is the third proper station after leaving Bridgnorth.<br />
What a delight to see litter-free stations with well-tended garden borders, no graffiti, trains running on time and helpful, friendly, unstressed staff, in full, proper uniform, with a smile on their face.<br />
Is the modern system really a mark of progress?<br />
Or like the N.H.S. is it just over-loaded by population despite the tireless efforts of its wonderful staff to provide an excellent service, in impossible conditions?<br />
Short, though our journey was, from Bridgnorth to Arley, return, we found it a most pleasant and agreeable experience!</p>

<p>Old Town Hall Arts Centre, Hemel Hempstead. Opened in three stages, 1857, 1861 and 1868, all designed by George Low in a Jacobean style, and replacing an earlier market dating from 1539. Following the creation of the New Town, the civic offices moved to a new building (now demolished) on Marlowes, and the OTH became redundant. In 1978, it was in use as a theatre and was refurbished and enhanced as an arts centre in 1986. The part used as the main theatre was designed as a multipurpose ballroom / corn exchange, and theatre was occasionally presented from the start. It has been improved on several occasions, the 1986 scheme had benches on a creaking retractable rake, now there are tip-up seats on a permanent rake. Drama, stand-up, music and films are all part of the mix. In addition, the cellar Bar has been reopened after a period of closure in a radically changed format. The main house seats 110, whilst the Cellar upto 65. There is also a large café / bar / gallery, and the usual admin, dressing rooms, and meeting rooms. It is grade 2 listed.<br />

<p>There is light at the end of Wansford Tunnel... even if the winter sun hasn't penetrated the cutting at the western end.<br />
<br />
For a GCR engineman it's still quite a novelty to pass through a tunnel on the footplate. Opened in 1845 at 616 yards Wansford is the longest on a preservation line.<br />
<br />
Here British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78019 is heading east away from Yarwell Junction station and after passing through the tunnel will enter Wansford station for the second time with the 10.00 service to Peterborough.</p>
