<p>A run down to Old Trafford, while the game was being played, yielded just one picture - I guess the mud prevented me from getting near anything else ! I bet the drivers all loved it when they got back to the depot to do the clean-up ....<br />

I did not recognise this Whittle Contour, as it had only been re-registered a few days earlier, and I couldn't get closer to it to try and identify it, so I made do with the picture, and waited for its details to appear. It had been GBB 254 here, one of five Bedford YNTs delivered to the firm in 1984. I thought the loss of the plate might have meant it was on its way, but it remained here for another three years. After passing through several hands in later years, it returned to Shropshire in 1996, with R&B Travel near Ludlow, where it would spend the rest of its days. It was not withdrawn until 2011, and was kept back as a possible project, but eventually ended up as scrap.<br />

A postcard bearing no publisher's name. The image is a glossy real photograph. <br />

The card was posted in Bournemouth using two ½d. stamps on Wednesday the 20th. May 1925. The postmark states:<br />

'London Defended.<br />
Stadium Wembley.<br />
6 - 27 May<br />
8.30pm.'<br />

The card was sent to:<br />

Knowle,<br />
Bristol.<br />

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br />

<u>A Disastrous Flooding in Australia</u><br />
<br />
So what else happened on the day that Audrey posted the card to Kathleen?<br />
<br />
Well, on the 20th. May 1925, the Murrumbidgee River flooded in Australia, killing eight people.<br />
<br />
<u>Aleksey Tupolev</u><br />
<br />
The day also marked the birth in Moscow of Aleksey Tupolev, who was a Soviet and Russian aircraft designer whose developments included the Tupolev Tu-134 twin-engined jet airliner and the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144.<br />
<br />
Aleksey, who was the son of Soviet aeronautical engineer Andrei Tupolev, died in 2001.<br />
<br />
<u>Elias M. Ammons</u><br />
<br />
Elias M. Ammons died on that day, at the age of 64.<br />
<br />
Elias was a U.S. politician and Governor of Colorado from 1913 to 1915, and is known for the 1914 Ludlow Massacre of 21 civilians.</p>

<p>I felt quite sorry in the end for the young chap driving this truck and trying to thread it through the narrow entrance of the 13th century Broad Gate into Ludlow. <br />
He was there for quite some time, grinding backwards and forwards trying to position himself and his load of what looked like plasterboard to squeeze between the protective wooden bollards, while enduring the laughter from the tables outside the pub.<br />
<br />
He didn't make it, and I could hear him for at least another hour, still grinding and crashing gears around town as he tried to find a way through the ancient, often one-way streets.<br />
<br />
By coincidence I was there at his destination - down the hill just above Dinham Bridge, only a few hundred yards away - when he finally arrived. <br />
His three or four work colleagues, much older men, had obviously heard him all about town as they waited for him and they didn't half have a joke at his expense! <br />
I don't think he'll ever live it down.<br />

(And a rather alarmingly leaning chimney on the right of the drum towers!)<br />

<p>The pretty coaching yard through the arch at the Angel. I have a feeling the cottages are sheltered housing now but I could be wrong.<br />
It seems very narrow to deal with a coach and presumably 2 or 4 horses to enter and the horses changed. Perhaps it was infilled later on the left hand side with later housing when the coaching business died with the arrival of the railway in 1852.</p>
