<p>Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, né le 24 novembre 1864 à Albi et mort le 9 septembre 1901, au château Malromé, à Saint-André-du-Bois, est un peintre, dessinateur, lithographe, affichiste et illustrateur français.<br />

Panneau pour la baraque de La Goulue, Foire du Trône<br />

Description générale (ce que l’on voit)<br />

<br />
La toile montre une scène de spectacle et de foule dans l’atmosphère des cabarets montmartrois : au centre-gauche, Louise Weber dite La Goulue et son partenaire Valentin le Désossé exécutent des pas acrobatiques (le « chahut ») ; au premier plan, une dame élégante en robe rose et chapeau occupe le côté droit, profilée vers l’espace de danse ; en arrière-plan se devinent d’autres spectateurs et des figures connues (dont Jane Avril coiffée d’un chapeau à plume). L’ensemble donne l’effet d’un grand bal animé, vibrionnant, où la mise en scène du duo vedette concentre l’attention.<br />
<br />
Support, dimensions et statut (panneau / décor)<br />
<br />
L’œuvre fait partie d’un diptyque réalisé pour décorer la baraque de La Goulue à la Foire du Trône (l’autre panneau étant La Danse mauresque / Les Almées). Les formats sont importants et pensés pour un usage décoratif forain : on est loin de la petite étude intimiste ; il s’agit d’un grand panneau destiné à être vu de loin, avec des silhouettes lisibles depuis l’allée de la foire. Le Musée d’Orsay conserve ces panneaux et a procédé à une reconstitution à partir de fragments. <br />
<br />
Analyse formelle composition, cadrage, couleur<br />
<br />
Composition et cadrage : composition horizontale large, profondeur suggérée par la répétition des silhouettes et par la frise de têtes chapeautées à l’arrière-plan. Le premier plan droit (la dame en rose) crée un contrepoint statique face à la dynamique du duo central : contraste figure immobile / couple en mouvement.<br />
Ligne et rythme : Lautrec structure la scène par des profils fortement dessinés et des gestes accentués la ligne, héritée de sa pratique du dessin et de l’affiche, organise l’espace plus que la modélisation académique. Les gestes chorégraphiques de La Goulue et de Valentin guident le regard.<br />
Couleur et touche : palette riche mais contrôlée verts de la piste, ocres et bruns du parquet, accents rouges (bas de La Goulue) et roses (robe du premier plan) qui fonctionnent comme points d’attraction. La touche est rapide, parfois esquissée, adaptée à un usage décoratif et à la nécessité d’un effet d’ensemble lisible.<br />

Les personnages et l’iconographie (personnages réels)<br />
<br />
La Goulue (Louise Weber) : diva populaire du Moulin Rouge, célèbre pour son tempérament explosif et sa façon de provoquer le public. Lautrec la représente en pleine action de danse ronde, colorée, énergie spectaculaire.<br />
Valentin le Désossé (Jules Étienne Renaudin / Reinaudin) : partenaire emblématique, silhouette longiligne et presque inhumaine dans sa souplesse (d’où le surnom « le Désossé »). Lautrec joue sur la réunion de deux physiques contrastés, créant une dynamique visuelle très forte.<br />
Jane Avril : en retrait, coiffée d’un chapeau à plumes ; elle fonctionne ici comme un repère social (danseuse reconnue, moins spectaculaire que La Goulue mais très prisée).<br />
Maurice Guibert : le photographe et négociant en champagne, compagnon ou ami du cercle de Lautrec, est parfois identifié parmi les spectateurs : sa présence souligne le réseau social et la connivence entre artiste et acteurs du milieu.  <br />
<br />
Contexte social et artistique<br />
<br />
Paris, Montmartre, Foire du Trône, 1895 : la scène s’inscrit dans l’effervescence foraine et les loisirs populaires de la Belle Époque. Le Moulin Rouge (ouvert en 1889) et les artistes qui y gravitent incarnent la modernité parisienne, la fête, mais aussi la marchandisation du spectacle.<br />
Pratique de Lautrec : habitué des cabarets, il documente les numéros, les attitudes et les types sociaux sans pathos moraliste : son regard est observational, parfois complice, souvent ironique mais empathique. Les panneaux pour la baraque traduisent son travail à mi-chemin entre affiche, décor et peinture de genre.  <br />
<br />
Lecture interprétative (significations possibles)<br />
<br />
Spectacle et mise en scène de la célébrité : l’œuvre montre comment la notoriété (La Goulue, Valentin) fonctionne comme attraction : Lautrec capture la mécanique du regard collectif.<br />
Contrastes corporels et sociologiques : la rencontre d’un corps « massif » et d’un corps « filiforme » crée une chorégraphie visuelle et sociale (opposition populaire / mondain, corps-spectacle / spectateur élégant).<br />
Ambiguïté morale et réalisme sensible : loin d’un jugement moral sur la vie nocturne, Lautrec privilégie une observation fine des gestes et des attitudes, montrant autant la violence festive que la banalité du commerce du divertissement.<br />

Technique picturale au service du décor<br />
<br />
Le traitement est adapté à la visibilité à distance : grosses masses lisibles, accents colorés stratégiques (rouge, rose) et profils nets. Mais on retrouve aussi sa manière de dessinateur contours affirmés, économie des détails pour concentrer l’effet scénique. Le caractère parfois fragmentaire des outils (touches rapides) témoigne d’une exécution qui vise l’effet d’ensemble plutôt que la finition minutieuse.<br />
<br />
Réception, histoire de l’œuvre et conservation<br />
<br />
Les panneaux conçus pour la foire ont connu une histoire mouvementée : exposés dans un contexte éphémère, ils ont été ultérieurement dispersés, fragmentés et reconstitués le Musée d’Orsay possède les éléments et a restitué la composition pour conservation et exposition. L’œuvre est aujourd’hui l’un des témoignages majeurs de la manière dont Lautrec a transposé la vie des cabarets en art de grand format. <br />

Conclusion synthétique<br />
<br />
La Danse au Moulin Rouge (1895) est à la fois un panneau décoratif et un manifeste de la manière toulousaine : un art de l’observation, fondé sur la ligne, le geste et la couleur, au service d’une mise en scène du spectacle populaire. En opposant corps contrastés, en cadrant de manière cinématographique et en privilégiant les masses lisibles, Lautrec fixe ici l’énergie du cabaret et la mécanique sociale de la célébrité populaire à la Belle Époque. <br />
