as election day came. Every magical creature in the forest turned out to vote. They queued at the pine tree booths dotted around the woods, while badgers and squirrels checked everything over. Each animal voted in turn.

Everyone got a vote. Including my party – and me. The wait felt endless, and I wondered if I should just bow out now and return home. But then a satyr arrived – Dion of the Get Drunk and Fall Down Party, and a flock of blackbird reporters clamored for questions.

I ducked my head, hiding my ears under a black and white striped headscarf. I didn't want to be pestered by reporters. They'd been camping outside my den all morning. I would have stayed in, but Cashew suggested I disguise myself as a raccoon and sneak out the back. We found a black and white headscarf, and Labneh and Brie had great fun smearing charcoal on my face. It was only dust, and I knew it would wash out afterwards, but I still worried about it staining my fur.

'Why did I choose this for a disguise?' I mumbled.

A badger in front of me turned and sniffed, his eyes narrowed as he looked at me. I had to stifle the gasp, praying to the Great Tree he didn't recognise my face. He was the elder badger I spoke to at The Ferns near Oak Lane.

'Big turnout today,' he said.

I thought it obvious. Of course there was a big turnout. So why did he say that when all I had to do was look around? Never in the history of the magical woodland had every creature turned up to vote. The best anyone hoped for was half, usually less. Even a quarter of voters showing up at the booths was considered a good turnout nowadays.

'I'd prefer if we could vote online,' I mumbled. Lame answer, I know, but I didn't want to give myself away.

The satyr Dion seemed only too happy to speak to reporters. As they approached, he marched over, his chest out and his antlers in the air – and elbowed a squirrel family out his way. The family protested, but he ignored them. Several others shook their heads, but everyone else just looked up at him and cheered.

'How rude,' the badger muttered. 'The way he pushed that family out the way like they were nothing to him.'

'Typical politician. Always in it for themselves. But what choice do we have?' said a vole. 'They're all the same.'

We all watched the satyr speak to the press.

'What do you promise if you are elected?' a blackbird reporter asked, hovering so her beak was level with the satyr's face.

'Not if, when,' Dion the satyr grumbled. 'We have a plan and a set promise. Unlike our rivals in Birthday Party. I ask you, what is their promise? That impossible nonsense about apple blossom in autumn? What are they going to do for the woods?'

I wanted to point out he never actually revealed his party pledge. The only thing we heard on our campaign was a free bottle of wine and extra holidays. But holidays for who?

Dion went on and on about the other parties, but never said what he was going to do. He reminded me of a playground bully, picking on anyone he thought weaker than him. And the best way to deal with a bully was to stand up to them.

I stepped forward, ready to take off my raccoon disguise and let the press interview me after all. But then Dion's bodyguards jostled and moaned. Cashew shoved his way through and faced the reporters.

'Cashew of the Birthday Party,' he announced like no one knew who he was.

'Ah yes, the Birthday Party secretary,' Dion grinned mischievously.

'I like public relations manager, but secretary will do,' Cashew said. He sniffed and waved his paw in front of his nose. 'Pwah, something pongs. What did you drink this morning? I can smell the beer on your breath.'

'It's wine,' said Dion. 'We satyrs like wine. That's why we intend to replace all ivy with grape vines. Every tree in the woods will be heavy with grapes for us to crush and make wine with.'

'Hey, we bees like the ivy,' said a bumblebee.

'Well you drones would,' the satyr muttered.

'Drones?' the bee gasped.

'Drones to serve,' the satyr said. 'But we will change that. You will have freedom to assist in the cultivation of our wine economy.'

'Wine? Your breath smells beer-y to me. You know what they say, “Wine and beer, oh dear!”' Cashew chuckled. I don't think he intended to crack a joke, but the squirrel family laughed.

'Okay, okay,' Cashew said as all microphones pointed at him. 'How do you know when a politician's lying?'

'I don't know Cashew, how do you know when a politician's lying?' chorused everyone in the queue.

'Because their lips are moving!'

Everyone fell on each other chortling hard. The satyr's face went red with anger. So red I expected Cashew to crack another joke about steam billowing from his ears. Dion pushed his way through the reporters, shoving his hoof in a camera.

'No more questions,' he snapped.

An attendant watching the drama gestured it was our turn to cast our vote. She handed me a big chestnut leaf with a list of all the party candidates. A tick box beside to each name indicated who I wanted to vote for.

I dipped the point of a raven feather in blackberry juice, ready to place my great big X.

'How do we do this?' Cashew chuckled from the next booth. 'Do we place an X next to the candidate we definitely do not want to vote for?'

I think he was only joking. Hazel and Maisie both giggled.

'Silly Cashew,' they whispered.

I knew they'd all vote Birthday Party, but was it right to vote for myself? We only started this party for a prank after all, but now I was here, it didn't feel like a joke at all. We were still neck and neck in the opinion polls. Get Drunk and Fall Down was top of the list. I definitely didn't want to vote for them.

I read each name: Falafel, Birthday Party was next; then Belinda's Badger Set Party; the squirrel led Beech Nut Party – with Simon Squirrel pledging a beach of beech nuts in the woods. I wasn't quite sure how a beach of beech nuts was ever going to work, but a big part of me was curious to find out.

Then I saw the Bluebell Party. Rachel Rabbit of the Happy Slate District, promising eternal spring. I liked the sound of that.

I placed my X next to Rachel Rabbit, folded my leaf and dropped it in the ballot box.

'You did what?' gasped Cashew when I told my companions outside.

'I voted Bluebell Party,' I said.

'But they'll never get in. Everyone votes Bluebell as a protest vote. We are supposed to keep Get Drunk and Fall Down out of government,' said Labneh.

'I thought we were the protest joke vote,' I said. 'We only did this for a laugh, remember?'

'That was until we tied in the opinion polls,' said Pistachio.

I saw he had a point, but it was too late now. We waited anxiously for the result.

'The results are close,' a speaker announced. 'We have to do a recount to be sure.'

'Only because you dropped one of the ballot boxes,' said the elderly badger. 'I saw it!'

Squirrels, rabbits and voles murmured in agreement.

'I saw it too,' said a robin from the treetops. 'The ballot box just happened to be somewhere Get Drunk and Fall Down get less votes. I bet those votes have mysteriously disappeared.'

'Or been replaced with big Xs next to Dion's name. How do we know?' said the badger.

Everyone however hushed when the speaker announced the final count had taken place. The results were there ready on the oak leaf folded in his paw.

He read the results and looked across to me. I felt my heart thump at the glimmer of amusement in his eyes.

'No, it can't be,' I gasped.

'It can,' Cashew laughed as the result was announced.

We had not only defeated Get Drunk and Fall Down in the election, we had won with a landslide majority.

Snuggles from Falafel, Cashew, Pistachio, Cumin, Amber, Nutmeg and Labneh.

Kingmoor Klickr posted a photo:

Collett '2800' Class 2-8-0 No. 3802 slowly but surely gets underway from Berwyn station with the 10.00 Llangollen to Corwen service on Saturday 3rd October 2026.

© Gordon Edgar - All rights reserved.
