<p>Commentary.<br />
<br />
<br />
Warwick Castle is a very large, impressive, archetypal English Castle.<br />
It was founded in 1068 by William the Conqueror.<br />
As was often the case the original castle was a wooden construction on a motte or mound.<br />
A stone version followed in the 12th. century.<br />
Most of the present site is post-medieval but is no less impressive for that.<br />
Caesar’s Tower, north-east, and Guy’s Tower, north-west, were added in the mid-14th. century.<br />
Under the Kingship of Richard 111 two gun towers, “Bear” and “Clarence,” were added by the late 15th. century.<br />
In the 16th. century the castle became somewhat neglected. <br />
However, as with many castles by the 17th. century, their role as effective military defences had declined and many, including Warwick, were re-designed and renovated to become grand stately homes for wealthy or entitled owners.<br />
In 1604 King James 1 granted the ruinous Warwick Castle to Sir Fulke Greville.<br />
After being ennobled as Baron Brooke in 1621 he spent £20,000, equivalent to c.£5,000,000 in 2026, to renovate the whole site.<br />
The 2nd. Baron Brooke, Robert Greville, enhanced the defensive specifications in 1642 in preparation for potential attack during the First English Civil War.<br />
Walls were raised, artillery mounds created and cannons added.<br />
Attacks by the Royalists were feeble and failed miserably.<br />
Several times, Royalists were imprisoned in the dungeons.<br />
In the 18th. century even the great landscaper Lancelot “Capability” Brown was commissioned to give the castle a more natural, countrified appearance with trees, shrubs, lawns and sweeping, vegetated banks below the walls.<br />
In the 21st. century Warwick Castle has become a major tourist attraction.<br />
Visitors come from all over the world.<br />
Tens of thousands of students and schoolchildren visit every year as part of their education.<br />
It is now protected as a “scheduled monument” and is rightly a Grade 1 Listed Building.</p>

<p>I saw a group of 5 of these babblers at Leslie Dam outside of Warwick last week. Social birds, very chatty. Looked like a bit of follow the leader was going on with them, one bird would fly to another tree and the other 4 would follow suit.</p>

<p><u>The Postcard</u><br />

A Famous Old Gardens Series Oilette postcard that was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen. The card was printed in England.<br />
<br />
The publishers have printed the following on the back of the card:<br />
<br />
'Easton Lodge is a beautiful<br />
country mansion in the<br />
neighbourhood of Dunmow,<br />
Essex. It is the seat of the<br />
Earl and Countess of Warwick,<br />
and one of the finest mansions<br />
in the county.<br />
It contains many objects of<br />
interest connected with the<br />
history of Essex, and is<br />
surrounded by lovely grounds.<br />
A particularly attractive portion<br />
of these is the Dairy Garden,<br />
here depicted."<br />
<br />
The card was posted in Weston-super-Mare using a 1d. stamp on Tuesday the 3rd. June 1919. It was sent to:<br />

<br />
The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br />

"Dear Alice,<br />
Don't work too hard.<br />
It is very hot here,<br />

<br />
<u>Easton Lodge</u><br />
<br />
Alas, Easton Lodge is no more. Tuck's 'lovely grounds' have also mainly gone.<br />
<br />
Easton Lodge was a Victorian Gothic-style stately home in Little Easton and north-west of Great Dunmow, Essex.<br />
<br />
Once noted for its weekend society gatherings frequented by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), it was one of many country houses destroyed during the 20th. century. <br />
<br />
Part of the west wing (rebuilt as a separate house after a fire in 1918 for use as servants' quarters) still stands; and the Grade II listed gardens designed by Harold Peto are under restoration and are open to the public.<br />
<br />
-- <u>History of Easton Lodge</u><br />
<br />
Designed by Thomas Hopper, Easton Lodge replaced an earlier Elizabethan mansion built in 1597 by Henry Maynard, which had been destroyed by fire in 1847. The Elizabethan house had itself replaced an earlier hunting lodge, situated by the church, which had been granted to Henry Maynard in 1590 by Queen Elizabeth I.<br />
<br />
Most famous of those who lived at the house was Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick, who was born Frances Evelyn Maynard at Easton Lodge in 1861. She inherited the estate when she was just four years old. <br />
<br />
Daisy became a socialite and mistress to King Edward VII, and continued to live at Easton Lodge with her husband, the 5th. Earl of Warwick after her marriage. As a result the Lodge became famous for its society gatherings. <br />
<br />
The family of H. G. Wells also lived in one of the properties on the Easton Lodge estate. Lady Warwick, a socialist, offered the estate to the Labour Party and to the Trades Union Congress as a study centre, but they did not accept it.<br />
<br />
-- <u>Easton Lodge in WWII</u><br />
<br />
During World War II the estate was requisitioned by the War Office, leading to the destruction of some 10,000 trees to enable the construction of RAF Great Dunmow (also known as RAF Little Easton) in the former parkland. (See aerial photo below).<br />
<br />
The house was largely demolished following its return by the military in 1950. Much of the Easton Lodge estate is now owned by Land Securities.<br />
<br />
After 30 years of abandonment, the west wing was purchased in 1971 and is now used as a private house. The late 19th. century stable cottages and a red brick water tower also remain, and are Grade II listed buildings.<br />
<br />
-- <u>Easton Lodge Gardens</u><br />
<br />
Following the purchase of the remaining wing of the house in 1971, the restoration of the gardens began. The Gardens of Easton Lodge are now open to the public, and since 2003 have been supported by The Gardens of Easton Lodge Preservation Trust.<br />
<br />
The gardens, designed by Harold Peto in 1902 for the Countess of Warwick and considered one of his finest works, have been designated Grade II by English Heritage in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.<br />
<br />
<u>The Third Anglo-Afghan War</u><br />
<br />
So what else happened on the day that Alice's mother sent her a postcard?<br />
<br />
Well, on the 3rd. June 1919, facing a general retreat and losing units to capture, Afghanistan pursued an armistice with the United Kingdom. <br />
<br />
Some fighting with local militia continued for another two months before a peace treaty was signed on the 8th. August 1919. <br />
<br />
The Afghans lost 1,000 men, while the British recorded 236 killed in action, 615 wounded, 566 deaths from cholera, and 334 deaths from other diseases or accidents.<br />
<br />
<u>Elizabeth Duncan Koontz</u><br />
<br />
The day also marked the birth in Salisbury, North Carolina, of Elizabeth Duncan Koontz.<br />
<br />
Elizabeth was an American educator and activist, and the first African American woman to be president of the National Education Association. She was also the 6th. director of the United States Women's Bureau.<br />
<br />
Elizabeth died at the age of 69 in 1989. She was laid to rest in <br />
Oakdale Union Hill CemeterySalisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. <br />

<p>This is Warwick Castle, a historic medieval fortress located in Warwick, Warwickshire, England. The castle's central courtyard, features two of its most prominent structures: the tall, imposing Guy's Tower on the left and the Gatehouse (including the Barbican) to the right. It was originally built as a wooden motte-and-bailey castle by William the Conqueror in 1068, just two years after the Norman Conquest. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt in stone and is now considered one of the most well-preserved examples of 14th-century military architecture in the UK. It was the home of Richard Neville, the 16th Earl of Warwick—better known as "Warwick the Kingmaker"—a key figure in the Wars of the Roses. <br />
<br />
It was used as a stronghold until the early 17th century, when it was granted to Sir Fulke Greville by James I in 1604. Greville converted it to a country house, and it was owned by the Greville family (who became Earls of Warwick in 1759) until 1978, when it was bought by the Tussauds Group.<br />
<br />
Visitors today can explore its Great Hall and State Rooms, walk along the ramparts, or even stay overnight at the Knight's Village.<br />
<br />
In 2007, the Tussauds Group was purchased by the Blackstone Group, which merged it with Merlin Entertainments. Warwick Castle was then sold to Nick Leslau's investment firm, Prestbury Group, under a sale and leaseback agreement. Merlin continues to operate the site under a renewable 35-year lease.<br />
<br />
Visitors today can explore its Great Hall and State Rooms, walk along the ramparts, or even stay overnight at the Knight's Village.<br />

<p>The last few of this visit to St Mary's, where the poignant tomb of 'the Noble Impe' is now easier to see than it used to be, so I ought to start with his parents buried opposite. <br />
This is the very elaborate tomb of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and his wife Lettice Knollys. He was condemned to death in 1553 after his father, the Duke of Northumberland, failed to establish Lady Jane Grey on the English throne. He was released in 1554 and having taken part in the Battle of St Quentin under Philip II of Spain, was accepted again at the Court. He became Lord Steward of the Royal Household, and in 1564, became Earl of Leicester and one of the greatest landowners in north Wales and the west midlands. During the Spanish Armada, he was in overall command of the English land forces. <br />
Dudley’s first wife, Amy Robsart, died after falling down a flight of stairs in 1560, thought by many to be a suspicious death. He courted Elizabeth assiduously, and organised a spectacular festival at Kenilworth Castle in 1575 where the Queen stayed for three weeks. For 18 years after his wife’s death Dudley did not remarry and when he finally did, his new wife, Lettice Knollys, was permanently banished from court. After nearly three years of marriage and several miscarriages, the long-awaited heir was born on 8th June 1581. From birth, Robert Dudley was styled Baron Denbigh, his father’s subsidiary title, and known as ‘the noble impe’. Tragically, on 19th July 1584, at the age of three, he died at Wanstead, his father’s country house in Essex. Lord Denbigh was laid to rest in the Beauchamp Chapel, next to his ancestor Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. Dudley was buried here in 1588, at his request, as was Lettice when she died – some 46 years later – in 1634.</p>
