Unlike allotments, on which their tenants grew vegetables and fruit on strips of land, Hill Close was always planned as individual garden plots, detached from houses. In a town as long established as Warwick, apart from the grandest houses very few had any garden, and what space they had would have been taken up by a wash-house, coal store, privy and (if they were successful in their business) a pig sty and a stable. Originally there were 31 plots but many of the leases having been bought, some were sold in the 20th century for housing. Fortunately some 16 remain, with ten summerhouses and the gardens operate as a charity. <br /> We went on their last day of opening before their winter break.
