<p>On either side of the chest tomb to Thomas Beauchamp are choir stalls, dating from the rebuilding of the church after 1694. Each one has a finely carved decoration, either one of the four evangelists or as here, a musical angel. I assume this one is praying or singing (or possibly both).</p>

<p>Having visited St Mary's on a number of occasions, I find I photograph the same objects over and over again. At the same time, there are some I mostly ignore, and I'm afraid this reredos in the chancel is one of them (the reredos in the Beauchamp Chapel being another). It was designed in alabaster by Butterfield in 1885 and features a nativity scene with four shepherds and a sheep on the left and three wise men on the right, all rather brightly painted and gilded. Presumably before it was installed, there was a plain view of the east window behind the altar.</p>

On all four sides are delightful carved figures of mourners, both male and female, and with very detailed clothing. Below them are shields which originally bore coats of arms, now long worn away. According to Pevsner, a number are plaster replacements.</p>

<p>A view from the chancel towards the west door. The tomb of Thomas de Beauchamp and his wife Catherine is in the foreground in between the choir stalls. He was responsible for rebuilding the church in Gothic style and hence takes pride of place in the chancel, even if off-centre. His church burnt down in the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694, so much of what you see today was designed by Sir William Wilson.</p>

<p>This is the alabaster tomb of Thomas Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick (1313-1369) and Catherine, Countess of Warwick. She lived 1314-1369 - a year younger than her husband, she died in the same year. She was the daughter of Roger Mortimer, Earl of March and was married to Thomas de Beauchamp at the age of five. Presumably they had to wait at least a decade before being properly married but they produced fifteen children. The detail on her headdress and his chainmail is astonishing.</p>

<p>As we had family visiting for the day recently, we popped into St Mary's in Warwick, always worth a visit. Officially the Collegiate Church of St Mary, it was first built on this site in 1123 by the Earl of Warwick, but only the crypt survives. The rest was rebuilt in the 14th century by Thomas Beauchamp (pronounced Beecham) in the English Gothic style. It was largely destroyed by a great fire in 1694 that swept away most of Warwick's timber buildings, but it was a good time for rebuilding, and much of Warwick's centre is in Queen Anne style. The people of Warwick donated £11,000 to rebuilding it and Queen Anne donated £1,000. Although Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor were consulted about the redesign, the one chosen was by Sir William Wilson, an architect and statuary mason. It's essentially Gothic, and received harsh criticism over the years, described as 'a tasteless mix...of great barbarity'. <br />
It houses the magnificent Beauchamp Chapel (added in the 15th century) and the chapel of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (Royal Regiment of Fusiliers) along with a number of fine tombs. <br />
This is the tower, attached at the west end, which only emerged again a few months ago, having spent many months covered in scaffolding and sheeting.</p>
