The Gabchikova Locks - among some of the largest river locks in the world, raising our Viking Longship 58ft on its route towards Bratislava. Conceived in 1977 as part of a larger scheme to control flooding, improve navigation and provide hydro-electric power for both Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the Gabcikovo Dam was completed in the 1900s but proved controversial for environmental and economic reasons. As a result, Hungary withdrew from the project and the disagreement between (now) Slovakia and Hungary became a protracted international dispute for many years. Nevertheless, since the Danube is part of the crucial Rhine-Maine-Danube European central corridor, the Gabcikovo Locks underwent an EU-funded modernisation and complete overhaul from 2019 to 2023.

We had read about these miniature sculptures before we went to Budapest and JJ's mission was to find these little dogs! Here are the photos I took on my phone.

Guerrilla sculptor Mihajlo Kolodko, known for creating little figurines of iconic characters in Hungarian culture, has just left his latest work where Batthyány utca meets Hattyú utca. Calling it ‘Once Upon a Time There Was a Dog Fair in Buda’, the artist features different breeds, including Hungarian vizslas and pulis.
Once Upon a Time There Was a Dog Fair in Buda is the title of a Hungarian folk tale (usually a King Matthias tale) and the title of the cartoon that adapted it; as a sentence, it is a saying from a folk tale.
According to the story of the folktale, ‘at the intercession of the righteous King Matthias’, the poor man’s dogs are bought by the nobles at the Buda Fair for good money. Hearing this, the greedy rich man turns all his wealth into money, buys dogs with it, and goes to Buda with the pack of dogs. There, however, he is chased away while being told that “once upon a time there was a dog fair in Buda, only once.” The dogs run away and the rich man’s fortune is lost. (From welovebudapest.com and hungarytoday.hu)
